Shoulder Problem

I'm come here looking for some support with this shoulder injury bc it's really screwing up my workouts and bothering me now. I'll give some background before I get started.

My shoulder kind of been an on and off problem for me for almost 2 years. One day I injured it doing something, I don't remember at one point really pulling it, but that night it was painful to lift overhead. Eventually it went away and it comes and goes but now it has come back in a different way, probably unrelated and is really bothering me.

It only hurts when I do chest and biceps and not when I do shoulders. The pain feels like a burning inside and across the anterior portion of my deltoid. Overhead movements and lateral raises do not bother it at all. It has gotten to the point now where I have to stop the exercise bc my shoulder burns so bad and not bc my chest or bicep is tired. I get the same burning feeling when I do the external rotation exercise for my rotator cuff. The pain start about half way through the set and gets progressively worse and then disappates as soon as I stop.

I have seen an ART Specialist and a physical therapist. They're not sure exactly what's wrong but they said it could be tendonitis, could be a tear in the rotator cuff or the labrum but that I should have lost range of motion or feel more pain if that was the case. The ART has helped with range of motion but not relaly the pain. I go to see an orthopedist end of the month and hopefully get a cortisone shot and an MRI. Oh, and neither ibuprofen or vioxx helped it at all.

Any suggestions or experiences are welcome. Thx in advance.

Sounds like rotator cuff... If not, then the cortizone shot should help it. I get the same thing sometimes and it just takes time for it to heal. The key is to train as smart as you can... Decrease the weights and increase reps. As soon as you feel a twinge, then stop, get you stuff and leave the gym... Try to hit the whirlpool too.. That helps.. Oh there is a lot of over the counter anti inflamatory pills you can take..... Inflazme is one... That may help..

Be aware that although the Cortizone shot will reduce inflammation and pain that it will also hinder recovery and healing. It is well documented that local Cortizone injections have a long term detrimental (wasting) effect on tendon/ligaments. It's a vicious cycle where people continue getting the Cortizone shots which weakens the injury causing more pain requiring more Cortizone, etc. This is also similar to the long term effect of NSAIDs (non steroidal anit-inflamatories) which can also hinder healing. Not only have a read this but my PT doctor (I'm recovering from lower back strain) told me the same thing and wanted to get me off NSAIDs as soon as possible and within a week of being free from the NSAIDs my recovery really started taking off. Also, do some research on prolotherapy at www.prolotherapy.com.

Hope you feel better.
