seems like a fashion dilemma but it's really much more.

So, I was invited to my bosses house. She's having a meeting for all the outside sales people from around the world. People are flying in from germany, sweden, japan, isreal, and the UK. The night before the meeting begins, she's hosting a dinner at her house and invited me.

cool. It's outside. lobster, steak, locally grown corn (that i'm bringing), wine (that i'm bringing), salad (that i'm bringing).

so, i'm a bit neurotic. or a perfectionist. or maybe i'm a worrier. whatever. i don't know. I'm already trying to figure out how i'm supposed to dress. We dress casual in the office. Jeans are standard, but it's perfectly acceptable to wear your workout clothes all day (i don't), and some people dress nicer in slacks and heels, or a button down shirt. My boss wears purple jeans almost every day.

Do i dress in jeans and sneakers and a cute top like i often wear to work and have my outfit say "I'm glad to be here and have a casually good time with all of you."
or do i dress in something nicer- slacks and a blouse and say "Hi. I'm stilleto. i'm professional."

also, do i bring her a hostess gift? i could bring a handmade glass piece- like a serving platter. or is the fact that i'm bringing wine, corn, and salad (ok, and some folding chairs and citranella candles) enough?

do i kiss my boss hello like i would kiss anyone who's house I was going to? (you know, on the cheek). She's not a warm person but she's very nice.

also, she said to arrive between 4-5pm. does that mean 4:30? what time should i get there?

don't dress up for a picnic. Dress in the casual pants and top. Ask her if she needs you to come early to help set up the chairs, etc. If she says no then arrive at 4 since you are bringing the candles and chairs. A gift is overkill since you are bringing so much other stuff already. Don't kiss her. I'm not a touchy feely type person in any setting besides a romantic one, and I get a little uncomfortable when people kiss me in that sort of situation. A nice handshake and smile makes me way more comfortable. She sounds like she is the same type as me in that regard.

Wow, for once I agree with HR.

plus do people really kiss each other as a greeting? I'm going to start trying that at the clubs.

i'm not a kissy person either but my coworker asked me and i started wondering what i was supposed to do. my boss is european and those fukkers kiss anything.

it's not a picnic though- it's a sit down dinner, outside. its lobster and steak, not burgers and hotdogs.
most of my clothes are casual, so even if i wear a long skirt, it'll probably be a wrap around kind with sandals.
