For my traps and nearly everything else I can't reach...I put a tennis ball in a sock, throw it over my shoulder and lean against a wall. It can bring tears to your eyes.
I always fly with it with me. I take the tennis ball out of the sock though, don't want customs thinking I'm bringing a weapon on the plane!
I use a tennis ball and my foam roller all the time. Mainly on my hips, piriformis, inner thigh/groin, scapula and any other tight spots. I have a lacrosse ball, but I haven't graduated to that level of self torture yet.
The best advice I can give is to be proactive. Stretch and do self myofascial release often and regularly. I think anyone who pushes the limit and lifts heavy will always have aches and pains. Just don't let those aches and pains turn into full blown injuries.
