Hey guys,


Well that time is here... We will be instituting some new rules in the C&C forum. We will also be creating two other forums here in C&C. The first will be a Politics & Religion forum where people can discuss these issues in a civilized manner. The other will be a Platinum-Only forum where members will enjoy some of the same freedoms they enjoy here now.

This version of chat will change a lot. Basically we are getting rid of the insults and personal attacks.

What we are noticing is that by catering to a few individuals who get a thrill out of posting insults and making derogative comments, we are chasing away A LOT of people who don't want to participate in a site that has this sort of content.

The number of people who read C&C and decide never to come back, is greater than the ones who actually get enjoyment out of calling each other a "Fag" or "Cunt" just for kicks.

We will lay out a clear set of rules for the forum. Everybody is expected to follow them.

Some of you will complain at first, because nobody likes new rules, but I know you will enjoy the new way things will run here. Some of you might leave to never come back, as long as you were not banned the doors will be opened for you to come back.

For those that stay, I promise you we will have a new crop of good and interesting people to talk to. There will be a better level of conversation and association with the members unlike anything you have ever seen here before.


There will be some new rules regarding Moderators on the site. The Moderators themselves will have a new code of conduct that will require them to maintain a professional courteous demeanor at all times. In turn, the members are expected to maintain a level of respect for the Moderators at all times... The days of personal arguments with the Mods and Admins are over. There will be a new respect for the position, and a new level of behavior that will be expected out of people in this position... We will also be instituting some new Mods on the C&C forum who will be asked to help uphold the rules... Look to your PM boxes for invitations to join the Mod team. Most of you have never been approached for the Job before.

In order to maintain a good balance between the staff and members, we will also be appointing members for the newly created position of "Ombudsman". These members will NOT be part of the staff, but rather represent the interests of the forum members by investigating and addressing with the Mods and Admins any complaints reported by individual members.

There will be a couple of members who will be appointed to the position of Ombudsmen ( this was an idea we discussed with Digger weeks before the upgrade)
These members will be the first ones to listen to your complaint about a Mod or Admin action. They will take your grievances to the Mod forum and speak on your behalf. An agreement will be reached about the proper course of action between the Ombudsmen, Elite Mods and/or Admin...

There will be a couple of members who will be named Ombudsmen. You may choose any one of them to take your grievances to the Mod forum. You can choose the person you feel will best represent you in your particular case. They can also turn you down if they feel your particular complaint is frivolous or a waste of time.

The Ombudsmen are going to be granted Mod Forum access but only to speak on your behalf. The Ombudsmen will not have any Mod powers at all. They work for the members and are not really part of the Mod Staff.

I'm sure you (or any member) would be offended, and maybe felt a serious line was crossed. One of the things we want to implement, is a rule against making remarks about people's families.
I think it is great that many members come here and share their personal family stories and pictures with us. But what ends up happening is those same stories then are used to make inappropriate jokes about them. No need for specific Mods for that section, the Chat Mods will work that forum too.

As long as people are respectful to each other, they can talk about their political differences all they want. We don't push any political agenda here or promote any of the candidates. All of the political content here is generated by the users.

The Mods need to be able to get rid of spammers quickly and easily without having to wait for an Admin...
As far as the issues with the members go.
I guess when the members stop getting a thrill out of pushing the Mod's buttons, maybe then we won't need to give them banning powers. As long as some members (usually the same people) get a kick out of making veiled insults and pushing the buttons of the guys who volunteer their time here, we need to give them a tool to correct that behavior.

No really though on a serious note here, good decision guys and ladies. I think it is true that newbies don't want to join and see the sludge that is often posted. Especially if they are joining for more than just chat and convo.

Stopping personal attacks/insults is taking it a bit far IMO, it's like religion being forced upon us at such an early stage we have no control and follow the norm.

I, myself, don't enjoy the kaffeeklatsch, vanilla, moderated chat but have been living with it because I enjoy the people.

Our forefathers engaged in political discourse in bars and taverns. The Internet is that new medium.

As far as free speech, we're using a privately-owned server so there is no such thing here, except at the pleasure of EF's ownership. But for me personally, I'd be far more inclined to believe product testimonials from site where speech is less controlled. If any site (not singling-out EF at all) is willing to take down a post like: "Redguru Sucks!", then I'd think they'd also take-down a post like: "Product XYZ sent me to the hospital emergency room!".

The question to ask is what type of people do you want to attract? I thought that the previous iteration of C/C were a like minded bunch who took barbs at each other. Sure, we said things that could be taken poorly (and maybe was), but the team kept intact over the years. If we theorize that the attrition was due to those barbs, then we should also consider the 'usual' attrition rates that have come years before. Only time will tell if it's better or worse.

Personally for me, C/C has changed through the years. This is just another change.

They are just asked to be respectful when doing so, and for the most part every one in that forum dos. Go over and ask them if they feel they cant talk about a product and tell th truth about it. Not going to find many who agree with you bro.

I reall am not 100% sure on everything as of right now. In fact I myself have less to do with it then you would think.

Yes this is true. I think it would be nice to give a place for the deep rooted and very well planted chat members a place to be who the want to be, well also allowing a place for new members to come and start out slow and get to know every one. Not get thrown right into a pit of hell.

2 places. I would think the long time chat members would be happy to have a chat of there own now to do some of the more outrages stuff. As I said I don't really know everything about it, but I am sure it will be more to the liking of some of the chat members, and the more respectful shat will be great for new people coming around and people who don't want to have digs thrown at them.

I think its a win win.

That's awesome bro. I know many members feel the same way. There is no one over there saying you can't share your thoughts,ideas,feeling about a product,sponsor or other subjects just do it in a way that respects all parties involved. Also follow the rules set forth which are in place for a reason.

Yes this is true. I think it would be nice to give a place for the deep rooted and very well planted chat members a place to be who the want to be, well also allowing a place for new members to come and start out slow and get to know every one. Not get thrown right into a pit of hell.

2 places. I would think the long time chat members would be happy to have a chat of there own now to do some of the more outrages stuff. As I said I don't really know everything about it, but I am sure it will be more to the liking of some of the chat members, and the more respectful shat will be great for new people coming around and people who don't want to have digs thrown at them.

I think its a win win.

The question to ask is what type of people do you want to attract? I thought that the previous iteration of C/C were a like minded bunch who took barbs at each other. Sure, we said things that could be taken poorly (and maybe was), but the team kept intact over the years. If we theorize that the attrition was due to those barbs, then we should also consider the 'usual' attrition rates that have come years before. Only time will tell if it's better or worse.

Personally for me, C/C has changed through the years. This is just another change.

yup, totally agree. I don't look forward to logging as much of late. Slower and boring, the best threads either get locked or just flat out dissapear. Other boards have a no rules type section that they move these convos too. If the people who go in there understand what they're stepping into we should be able to say what we want. It's not a place for newbs at all.

flames are part of internet conversations and have been around since fidonet. The newsgroups perfected the tactic. What occurs here is mild in comparison, due to the moderation that has been around. I, myself, don't enjoy the kaffeeklatsch, vanilla, moderated chat but have been living with it because i enjoy the people.

Its great for us long time vets. Hay I used to be one hell of a flamer. I would take on all of ef in one big flam fest back in the day. Not so great for new members who do not really like this type of thing. So how would any logical person take care of a problem like this?

About 3-4 years ago I proposed a "Flame Forum" (which was an idea I stole from another board). If someone doesnt like me (or something I said in another thread), they can go to that forum, start a thread about how much of an asshole I am, and others who agree (or disagree) can join in.

If you are sensitive, dont even bother going in there.

It was a political discussion board, and believe it or not every forum outside of the flame forum consistently ran smoothly.

Yeah. This way the moment anybody starts flaming on THIS forum, the thread can be locked or moved to the flame forum.

If someone thinks an argument Im making in a thread here is the stupidest most retarded argument in history, they can go to the flame forum and start a thread saying "You see what kind of bullshit 75th was saying in XYZ thread? Hes a fucking idiot." People can join in.

Naturally, youd want to keep that forum free of racism or other over the line behavior, but you would want to remember that the whole point of that forum is for people to get out their aggression in a area that people who dont want to read that crap wouldnt have to.

Plus all the new business you are trying to attract for the board as a whole wont see me and heatherrae going at it, because we can simply talk about how dumb the other one is in that other forum.

Meh, if it was up to me I wouldnt do any more sub-forums. How often do you go into the movies, finance, music, clothes forums? We just talk about that shit on here.

I think politics, religion, and current events CAN continue to be talked about on here as long as there is a zero tolerance policy on flaming because that is what we will have the Flame Forum for.

Then again, I know this isnt up to me. Just my suggestion and I honestly think it would make everybody happy.

Yes.

For instance, if needto comes into the flame forum and starts a thread about how much of a tool I am, he (and the other mods) cant get upset when I make fun of him being bald.

At the same time, I understand the powers that be probably dont want members flaming mods anywhere on the board, so perhaps they should just stay out of it.

too many forums as is IMO, I don't frequent them because they get very little traffic. The AAS board and here are the only ones I usually hit up. On occasion I'll go the diet forum.
