I don't know about rennin, but if someone is lactose intolerant, generally they can have pure cream and hard cheeses because they contain no lactose. But cottage cheese and other soft cheeses like feta and ricotta are baaaad news for the lactose intolerant. Feta is the bane of my existence...
 
You can buy some liquid that you squirt into milk to pre-digest the lactose.

works well, but you have to leave the milk to sit overnight first
