I'm confused about your comment supersize.....why do you say that smiths are "helping"? I guess to a certain extent, I agree with what you are saying...they help me keep better form and balance, and take emphasis off of my lower back, but I still get one helluva workout for my quads, hams and glutes....if anything, they help me target those areas more specifically then straight squats...I know most of the bro's on the boards do straight squats, but I just feel like I do so much better with Smiths...and I've done both for several years, so I'm not someone who has never tried regular squats....I just happen to prefer smiths...If I wanna work lower back, I'll do deads or hyper extensions...when I wanna work legs, I want to focus as much as I can on them without having to worry about my back giving out or my form sucking the harder the set gets.....with smiths, I can go to failure without fear of snapping my back or straining something when my form starts to break down....

I'm not as big or strong as most of the bro's on this site, so I can't exactly come out and dazzle you with my experience and testify that smith squats are the way to go...I only know what feels best to me and what allows me to target my legs best....Try doing smiths, legs out front, not directly under the bar, with 2/4 tempo (concentric/eccentric) and see if you aren't smoked after 10 reps...only thing is, you gotta seriously check your ego at the door when you do 'em that way, cuz you'll probably only be able to do about 1/2 to 2/3 the weight you usually do...I was squatting around 250-275 for 4-6 reps when I was doing them 1/1 tempo, but slowing down to 2/4 is killer...

I did 6X 20kg plates each side on an Olympic heavy bar ATF for 3 reps a few years ago. Right now my max is about 5 though. I will do it again and this time I'll get a photo!

Just did a 470 at a powerlifting meet, missed 500. My HARDEST set however was 225 for 34 continuous reps with a close stance, ass to the floor. Going to try and beat it soon...

Hey heavywear, nice job...

I was wondering...why do they not use squat racks at powerlifting meets....or power racks for that matter. Can't they just set the failure bars really low that way incase you can't finish the rep you don't get killed?? Its not like it would be cheating as long as the bar didnt touch the failure bars.

Good question actually Garza. I have wondered it myself over the years as I have seen some horrible things happen during the squats. Your life is in the hands of the spotters for the day if you fail. Much easier to just bottom out in the rack if you can't get it. But it will never go over, too much ego and manliness to squat in the racks I think. Will make a good debate...

I do with 110 kg, but I don't know how much it means in lb.
1kg=2.2lbs
Does everyone else do way less with just a bar (no smith machine) I can't do as much cuz I am working out at home and just use a barbell (good cast iron weights though) and my squat is not as high as I could do at the gym. This is because I have use a lot of energy and strength to get the bar over my head and then procede with the squat and then lift the bar back over my head. By the time I am done my last set I am so exhausted it's pretty damn hard to get the bar back over. I want to let it just drop behind me but I am afraid it will go through the floor! :D

Maybe some people find it restricting. I always seem to end up banging the uprights as I walkout.....that could really throw you in competition.

Just a thought....
