I havn't been squating as much to date as I have simply gotten to strong for saftey reasons. I can easily step under 500+ for a ass to my heels but I am choosing to focus on extremely heavy leg presses right now and deadlifts. The deadlifts mimic the squat close enough to compensate when done correctly. I average 1490 for 10-15 reps for several sets. This is 26/ 45lb plates and a partner on top....

I know there are some big squatters here but I'll chime in for us normal people ;)

I've only started squatting 2 1/2 months ago when I got back into weightlifting after 2 years off. Before I was only doing legs presses and leg extentions so it was totally new to me. My first time I maxed at about 120 lbs for 6 reps @ 160 lbs. Today I did 215 lbs for 6 reps getting just bellow parallel at a body weight of 175 lbs and 5'11".

I may not be pushing the same weight as most here but I'm very happy with my progress so far. Hopefully in 6 months I can hit 300lbs for reps.

MaGilicuti - A good amount of weight to sqaut for a 160 lb guy is anything more than you did in your last leg workout. Just focus on proper form and progress and don't get caught up in comparing numbers with other guys in the gym. Just my advice...take it for what you will. V3

Good advice Veni!

I am 6'3" also.

I squat to parallel cause anything deeper is more ham and glute work.

I find that by going to parallel i can go heavier. Heavier squats = more growth.

I do squats primarily for quads also - i do more direct ham and calf work too.

I do sometimes drop the weight a bit and do a set or two of deep squats though - but only cause i spent so long increasing my flexibility to do so. It would seem like such a waste if i didn't...

By the way, I am just telling people what i do and I'm not preaching that others necessarily do the same. Do what works best for YOU.

*** I understand this is your way of thinking but do you realize that this is like saying doing partial bench presses is better since you can lift more weight?

It is the full range of motion which will determine ultimately along with other variables how much stimulation the muscle/s will recieve.

I understand what you mean mac, but i do squats for quads just as i do benches for chest [and not triceps.]

For hams i do more direct work, as well as leg presses.

I do also do full squats Mac, as i said.
