Take a close look at the spring itself, where it connects into one of the cylinders. Notice one side of the spring is straighter overall. I believe thats the dog leg. You may have to turn the gripper at different angles to see it. Hope that helps

This is funny stuff, I also kept wondering if I was hallucinating. I think I've got it now, though. If I hold a ruler against that inch or so of steel coming out of the handles, one side starts to curve at about 23mm and the other at 19mm. But it's so subtle!
