MORGAN COUNTY

Steroids sent by mail may lead to arrests Thwarted delivery to Morgan County man may see charges filed in Indiana, California.
By Tim Evans Indianapolis Star June 07, 2001

Martinsville -- Investigators in Morgan County expect that the discovery of nearly 20 pounds of steroids mailed to a Martinsville
man will lead to arrests in Indiana and California.

Detective Larry Sanders of the Morgan County Sheriff's Department said Wednesday the steroids were confiscated after a postal
inspector in California intercepted the package mailed to a Morgan County man.

The inspector notified postal officials in Indiana, along with Morgan County and state police, who then tracked the package as it
was forwarded to Martinsville.

The delivery was thwarted Tuesday when the man came to the post office in Martinsville to claim the package.

Sanders said no charges have been filed and the recipient, whom he declined to identify, is cooperating with the investigation.

But, Sanders said, he expects the man to be charged with a Class B felony for distribution of anabolic steroids.

Sanders said the steroids apparently were purchased in Mexico, then brought across the border to San Diego and mailed to
Indiana.

He said the drugs came in a variety of forms, including powder, pills and liquid. Some of the liquid was pre-packaged in syringes.

"Right now I'm trying to figure out what everything is. Most of the labels are written in Spanish," he said.

Some of the steroids appear to be for animals.

Sanders said the man, whom he described as a Caucasian male, is a body builder and apparently sold the steroids to other body
builders. He said the man distributed the steroids from his home in the Foxcliff North subdivision.

Sanders said they do not believe any young people or high school athletes received the drugs.

Watch Inspectors in these states

That sucks but the USPS is searching domestic next day packages. I have a friend that is a supervisor with the USPS and he says that people need to find other means of shipping other than USPS Next Day services. Regular mail, Priority 2-3 day services are okay. But not Express Service. There are five states were Express packages are flagged and checked, CA, TX, LA, MS and Florida or Nevada. I can't remember the fifth. However, they are watching shipments from these states and in many cases they remove the Express label check the packages and re-label with same label. They then make controlled deliveries if it is illegal stuff.

If by any chance you receive packages this way and you notice a small check on the label usually in the upper right hand corner, BEWARE. This means it has been called to security's attention but it may or may not have been checked. It is up to your discretion what to do. If you think back you may remember some of these checks. I know I do but I don't use Express any longer. Just be careful. They just busted a big time attorney in our area for receiving steroids and GHB through the mail (Express). They let him pick up the package then followed him home. He was kind of dumb because they made him sign for it even though the release waiver was signed.

Hope this helps.
