Richard Wright, founding member of Pink Floyd died today

sounds like the stuff dreams are made of

yes and no lol. i left out the part where i lied to my grandmother and she
called my probation officer 'cause i skipped school and was hanging out with known dopers who were 5 years my senior.:worried:

when i came home i was still tripping on acid and i had misplaced my shoes:faint:

I hated "The Wall" as soon as it came out, I was like "Gee Rog if you're so miserable why don't you just kill youself instead of forcing me to listen to this depressing crap?"

Love "Piper..." and "Saucerfull..." of course, but subsequent stuff such as "Umagumma" or "Atom..." is so self-indulgent that it's hard to take except in small doses. You could hear snippets of brilliance, but in my opinion they never really got it all together until "Meddle" which was just fucking brilliant. It was adventurous, melodic, and fun. The film score "Obscured By Clouds" has three songs on the second side that are like Meddle pt. 2 to me, and I think "Free Four" may be my favorite Gilmour guitar solo; the film music from side one is kind of an indulgent throwback to "Atom Heart Mother" to my ear, and the whole effort sounds cheap and slapdash, rather poorly recorded in a hurry at EMI Paris. "Dark Side..." is brilliant of course, but it's almost totally lacking in fun, and anyway I've heard it enough for a lifetime. "Wish You Were Here" has the high production value of "Dark Side" but seems more playful, I can still enjoy it. "Animals" just seems obscure to me, the songs seem droning and lacking in any sort of hook to grab the ear, but at least it's not annoying.

And that's where it ends for me, nothing they did after that is even listenable to me. By "The Final Cut" they had become the British Steely Dan. But damn I love the early psychedelic stuff.

The solo and lyrics in Free Four are awesome, but I always hated the cheezy poppy melody of the vocals.

One of my favorite Richard Wright-isms was his use of the Farfisa combo organ, which sounds like a cheesy Greek wedding band. He kept the Farfisa in his stage rig at least through the "Meddle" and "Live At Pompeii" period, and it's used prominently in "Echoes".

Philistine, that's what makes the song fun. What's wrong with a little melodicism?

i dig the early stuff too but not as much as i did when i was 18 and doing
psilocybin mushrooms every other day lol.

of course waters was a depressive lyricist.......shit, i'm a brooding asshole
myself so i felt a sort of kinship to his droning cynicism and overall
contemptuous world view lol. as you know, by the time final cut was made,
it was really just roger projecting his dissatisfaction on vinyl.

i agree, meddle may have been their best album but i can't believe you
didn't at least have an appreciation for animals.

come now, britans " steely dan" lol ..... and waters is an english donald fagan?

btw wasn't steely dan primarily made up of studio musicians? i know they got
their name from a dildo!!! don't know how i know that.....

"Obscured By Clouds"
Side 2
Cuts 1 and 2

That's where they peaked for me, I wish there was a whole album of this stuff. They flew off to Paris and dashed off "Obscured By Clouds" while they were in the early stages of recording "Dark Side...", funny how different it is. Or maybe it only seems different because the French production values were so sparse that you can hear the song shining through, instead of all the ear candy.

As for "Animals", I don't dislike it, but it just kind of lays there for me. It's got its moments, it takes you for a ride, but there's no memorable melodies, nothing I can whistle 'cause the tune just popped into my head as I was walking down the sidewalk. On the other hand, to be fair, I bet I haven't tried to listen to it in fifteen years.

that sucks. they are also one of my favorite bands.

Best Floyd songs: Money, Another Brick.., Comfortably Numb

Comfortably numb would come on and I would get the chills in my psychedelic cacoon on the couch.

The later stuff is like new metallica - suck ass.
