Would you prefer a practitioner, therapist, doctor to have....

Cindy, not saying those without experience are not good at what they do, but how can one heal if they've never really felt the pain?!

Like you and I understand your situation. Imagine going to a therapist who didn't understand abuse and just thought you were dramatic or nuts, but then you see a therapist who says "I lived what you did and I get it" and can break it down for you so you can work on getting past it all.
Just a quick example

I know, I was thinking the same thing. Maybe so...

I disagree and would never want to see a therapist who's young and had no/to little experience in what they were trying to help someone else overcome.

I do know better, I have lived double the life you have and have lived through more experiences than you.
They do not HAVE to be acquired first hand, but it makes for a much better therapist if they have. Fact really!

It's like a overweight person who never works out, being a trainer because they took the courses. Who wants to take advice from someone who cannot relate?

being older is not being wiser and having experience doesnt mean anything, we all have experience in different things, doesnt mean we learn from it, just mean we lived through it, I know 80 year olds with tons of experience in life and they still dont know dick, I've succesfully treated substance abuse patients and I've never even smoked a joint in my life, and guess what I was 22 when I counseled them.

For prostate exams I'd prefer a female doctor with skinny fingers. Age really isn't important.
dont you want a big thick finger that can firmly press and be sure there's nothing wrong? the skinny finger might just wiggle around...

Life experience is good even optimal is some cases but not always practical. There is just too much to learn that we must learn other's experience and teachings and the mistakes of others.

I would never hire a personal trainer that was out of shape and smoked. I would go to see a therapist to be treated for a mental illness that they have never suffered through but has successfully treated in others.

I think no matter what your job, having life experience will make you better at almost any job. it raises the common sense factor

Despite not being big on psychoanalysis I do believe in transference and countertransference, having a therapist with experiences such as yours can actually be detrimental because of this, your sessions, your stories can be something that they identify with, they recognize, something that moves them to their own experience and then they lose objectivity...

Despite Nan's run-on sentence, I totally agree that this can be an issue
