how practical would it be to cross the border like once a week and use the gear in tj? im thinkin take the trolley from san d. and walk the border pick up the gear, maybe split it with a friend and use it down there...anyone know how long this takes (border waiting, etc) and does anyone do this?

Not practical at all unless you are crossing at the slow time of day. Land crossings take as much as 5 hours now. Three hours is average.

I've gotten lucky and gotten through the drive line in as LITTLE as 1 1/2 hours.. but the usual wait is longer. The searches are also ultra intense.

I DO NOT recommend TJ trips for newbies.

I did that for my first 3 cycles. Its not bad if you go around 10 or 11 am on a week day. its usually a 45min to hour wait at that time coming back. Or you can rent a bike for 5 bucks ride through which sometimes is faster (its a gamble). Just give your self 2 hours and you will be ok. I may have to start doing that again since my source is having issues.

SofaGeorge: the drive across when coming back has gotten ridiculous. I am just happy I haven't got in any fender benders waiting in that line. But it still beats walking.

You obviously haven't been over there in a long time.

Don't expect to get back in 45 minutes. That's laughable.

And don't bother looking for the bikes. They are long gone.

I went over 2 weeks ago and there was still bike rentals. If they are gone, then don't go over. That country sucks.

I just went 5 weeks ago with no problem. Bikes were their and was back in my truck in 1.5 hours. It ball depends on the day and time you go.

What crossing are you coming over at? The Hwy-5 crossing banned the bikes except for between like 5-7:00am? I'm not sure about the hwy-8 crossing.

If you saw a couple guys running bikes... I suspect it was their personal scam. But who knows. Maybe they just brought it back again. It'll be great for us all if they are back permanently. It was the only thing that made foot crossing bearable.

Border Patrol gave the bike rentals the boot big time. They also made it a point to search EVERYBODY on bike just to dissuade bike rentals.

This really screwed the Mexicans who needed to cross into San Diego on bike.
