So, Black peeps are bad tippers? RE: The Essence Festival, New Orleans

I got into a huge argument with a black dude I dated years ago. The bill came, he paid in cash, server collected the money, and we kept talking. Server passed us a few minutes later and homie is like "hey where's my change at, my man"? Assface had given like $29 for a tab a little over 28 and actually fucking expected change! Like 90 goddamn cents and wanted it back.

I ripped into his ass. Big argument. No second date for player.

I am not a restaurant/bar worker, but my place of work is a restaurant and bar. (We have live music, I'm the sound tech guy...) Anyway, the waittresses hate black customers because they're bossy, high maintenance, always want special orders and substitutions, and don't tip for shit. The black waittresses even complain. Black customers seem to take an adversarial view of the wait staff right from the start.

The only other group that is consistently as bad are teachers.

if you notice, it seems to be the people that think they are owed something. i admit i might be a little tight but i do tip. it's just that a tip above the 15-17% rule is for extra good service. otherwise why try to exceed?

that's what lack of class will do to you. just ignorance

south americans and europeans aren't the best tippers as well....but they get a bit more of a break because in their countries 10% is the norm or gratuity is usually included.

alot of places in south florida are smart...automatic 17% gratuity, although nothing worse than when the service is shitty and you stil have to pay that

I tend to tip well and if the service is sub-par, I`ll tip them the recommended gratuity and never go there again. My wife ( who is white) always complains that I tip too much from time to time. I thinks that sometimes black people pinch pennies while tipping because they think you are already rewarded for doing your job. You don`t see a huge amount of black waiters= Blacks don`t relate to tipping well for required services.

well I do, and they're usually better than the white waiters.........I usually tip more for the black women cause they just "have it".........so again, really don't understand. I've been to a local diner around where I live that's somewhat famous for being outside, the waiters/runners bring the food to your window..........anyway, I watched a black guy pay for his food with a roll of 100's. After he pulled away I heard one of the runners say that guy didn't tip a dollar............so it's gotta be some kind of chip on their shoulder, that's all I can think of.

i think you right about the chip. but to be fair, that chip could be on anybodies shoulder.

one of the best waitresses i ever had was a black lady. the food was good, but her personality is what made the dinner. i bet it is hard to keep that up with all the assholes coming in

Tipping may be voluntary, but there's an implied social contract here. Wait staff are paid much less than minimum wage, on the assumption that the balance will be made up in tips. The lowered cost of labor is passed on to the consumer in the form of prices -- if wait staff were paid a living wage, prices in restaurants would be higher.

Therefore, if a customer tips less than 15%, it's a breach of the social contract and an insult. People who cannot comprehend or abide by this social contract should not go to places that have table service.
