So, Black peeps are bad tippers? RE: The Essence Festival, New Orleans

there's a black funeral home in town that's always borrowing our inventory or they need to buy a low-end casket
their a pain in the ass because it takes time out of my day to get their shit they need and I don't ever charge them beyond cost
tried once and dude pitched a fit and I was "fuck it"
even the arguing wasn't worth it

and then one time we needed to borrow their hearse because we had 3 funerals in one day and one was going out of state

fuckers charged me $250
I would have loaned another funeral home my hearse for free

on another note I bartended for a dozen years and I avoided pre-judging people about what kind of tip I could expect
and some blacks suprised me often

Tipping may be voluntary, but there's an implied social contract here. Wait staff are paid much less than minimum wage, on the assumption that the balance will be made up in tips. The lowered cost of labor is passed on to the consumer in the form of prices -- if wait staff were paid a living wage, prices in restaurants would be higher.

Therefore, if a customer tips less than 15%, it's a breach of the social contract and an insult. People who cannot comprehend or abide by this social contract should not go to places that have table service.
Where does the 15% figure come from?

Tipping by definition implies a choice, left to the customers discretion. It's clear that usage of the word in the US has outgrown its actual meaning. The service staff wage deficit, better known worldwide as a 'service charge' of usually about 10% which is automatically added to your bill, is a more fitting term. No confusion, assuming, no social stigma, no explaining things to visitors with different skin colours, no drama.

In answer to the original post, adding a set service charge policy during the festival period would sidestep the whole issue.

it is confusing overseas
I was often in doubt as to tip or not
felt like a schmuck if I didn't and then still wasn't sure what percentage even though I knew the tip was in theer wage
and then that whole on the spot foreign currency calculations you have to do

The menu and/or bill will state a percentage added for service charge. When a service charge is stipulated then tipping is not expected, its completely up to you whether you want to tip extra or not.

well I do, and they're usually better than the white waiters.........I usually tip more for the black women cause they just "have it".........so again, really don't understand. I've been to a local diner around where I live that's somewhat famous for being outside, the waiters/runners bring the food to your window..........anyway, I watched a black guy pay for his food with a roll of 100's. After he pulled away I heard one of the runners say that guy didn't tip a dollar............so it's gotta be some kind of chip on their shoulder, that's all I can think of.
Sounds like Swensons
