Remeron - powerful anti-catabolic?

Bakgat

New member
Remeron (mirtazapine) from Organon is a new-age anti-depressant that comes in 15mg and 30mg tablets.

Remeron is widely reported to have shown to have an acute inhibiting effect on cortisol secretion in healthy subjects. Apparently, mirtazapine rapidly attenuates HPA axis hyperactivity via direct pharmaco-endocrinological effects.

See the following link for the evidence: http://www.biopsychiatry.com/mirtazremeron.htm

Does the data reflected in the above link suggest Remeron could function as an effective anti-catabolic? Furthermore, has anyone used Remeron effectively for this purpose?

BUMP

Is this something that could further tilt the anabolic vs catabolic equation in our favour or am I barking up the wrong tree?... anyone?

I think Remeron only hit the market in 1997. It is certainly available in my country. I would assume it is also available in the US.

The only problem I have with it is the number of people who get sides from it. The percentage 20% is just way too high for me to recommend it to someone coming off a cycle. Hormonal imbalances have you messed up enough. There was one study that one out of every 4 people dropped out because of anxiety, nausia, etc.
BUT, that said, some people I trust literally with my life at times are forming a consensus of authors, board owners, chemists, and veterans that will be posted on the POST CYCLE VETERANS CONSENSUS STATEMENT at Anabolic Fitness after the Holidays if anyone is interested.

Remeron (mertazapine) went generic in around '97 (but its still a/b $2/pill in the US).
It'll make you tired and hungry as hell though due to its antihistaminic properties.
At higher doses (+45mg/day) it stimulates the release of dopamine which can counteract the sedative qualities.
it shouldn't cause any anxiety at all, in fact its often used as an anxiolytic. If anxiety showed up as a side its more likely because its being studied in depressed pats where anxiety is just a comorbidity. Its very safe though and healthy people who eat normally shouldn't have any nausea or GI problems.
Honestly though, its probably too sedating to be effectively used for bodybuilders. If, as the study implies, antagonism of the presynaptic Alpha 1 or 2 receptors has anything to do with decreased cortisol secretion you might want to look at Venlafaxine (Effexor) as an alternative. (supposed to me even more stimulating than mertazapine and is not sedating)

just my thoughts.
