Question about tanning

I was wondering, how do you avoid tan lines? Specifically a line on your bum, on the sides. I tried lying on my stomach, however I find this rather painful, as there is nowhere to put my face. Lying on my side is EXTREMELY awkward, so can anybody offer any suggestions?
