nope. . .you did the right thing. . .every state's estate/inheritance laws are different and your situation sounds complicated enough to require an attorney. . .find one that is well versed in the estate/inheritance laws of the state where your father resided. . .preferably one that has a masters degree in taxation or an LLM. . .

Well, I am most positive that there are tons of fee's due to her not taking care of this. She spent every dime of insurance money and there are still bills waiting to be paid. I don't expect anything from her, but sure won't sit here and suck up all the debt without fighting. Her past history is nuts... why in the world my father fell for this woman I don't know. She sucked the life out of him, was married before to someone in the Mob... yes... and went to prision for murder... she had three kids whom all treated my father like shit. I didn't care for any of them and believe me, made it known. They came from the streets and when my father took them in took advantage of him to disgusting extents. He was really well off... It sickens me to even think about how they treated him.

the business. . .if it is still operational may need to be valued. . .i'm (among other things) a certified valuation analyst (cva). . .tell me what type of business it is (what industry) and where (what state) it's located and i can give you some telephone numbers of cva's in that state that you can talk to. . .generally initial telephone consultations are free. . .

In Kentucky, estates have to be settled within 2 years. You said this was in California, right? Something is very odd about this estate. Call the clerk at the courthouse and have them pull a copy of the file and send it to you. If the will was probated, it is public record. There is no way that I would sign off on anything without knowing what is up. Something about this entire thing smells fishy.

No, Its in Louisiana. I have on multiple ocassions made copies of the file thru the clerks office. It is all public documents and of course no one can stop me from having them.
Still nothing has been done since his death Nov 19,1997. I've been checking now and then and there is no new information.

I refuse to sign anything until I know whats going on.

You're handling this the right way...don't give her what she wants until you get what you want!!! Don't lose the only leverage you have.

So my father passed away in Nov of 1997... My step mother completely just kept us out of everything, including the reading of the will. I have pursued this situation over and over, I continued to try to find out information but the family lawyer wouldn't even talk to me. Nothing has been settled as of yet, She cashed in close to a mil in life insurance which by LA law does not have to be put in the estate. The home has been turned over to my younger sister and my step mother has gone on with her life. I am happy she did, thats no problem... we all want to be happy.

The problem is that the car, house, property and company is still under my fathers name and with all my requests hasn't been settled. Now, they wrecked the car and before they can do anything they need both my and my sisters signature. So here is my issue... I've requested all be taken care of for the last 10 years and NOW they need me to do something for them.

Ok, I am really just ranting... I refused to sign a thing until the sucession is completed. I guess I am wrong for this... I really am not sure. bleh....

Somethings not right here. You need to get your own attorney
