Non Dext - PW Shake

So, those who pass on dext and the high gi spike, what is your current pw shake of choice?

Fruit?
Oats
cereal
rice cake?
yogurt
milk?

I usually use fruit only because I don't like to use milk in protein shakes (I rarely have it in the house, or if I buy it in a health food place they usually put like 20 million cups in and refuse to listen), plus fruit gives it that thickening you want. Of course, this is just my preference - I've read that it doesn't really help very much as it is processed in the liver...

However, in my opinion, that banana/pineapple combo can give you enough of a spike ;)

Some fructose in your pwo shake may indeed be beneficial, especially if it was an enduring workout. Replenishing liver glycogen is a good thing. I remember years ago, Twinlab had a drink out called Power Fuel I believe it was. It was a good blend for pwo, contained a bit of fructose...not alot, as liver glycogen is restored fairly easily.

By the way, to add to my post, fruit has way less fructose than most think, it's a mix of glucose, sucrose and fructose. So don't feel bad about "some" fruit pwo.

i used to do raw oats with whey years and years ago. i like the dex/whey combo better. really not much difference from my experience.

no fan od dextrose....dont feel the body needs it...as for oats, good, but I like to eat a meal with 45 minutes and it makes me too full

how about
rice cakes
whey
and a banana w/ skim?

To answer your original question, I use ground-up oats as my PWO carbs, but what you have above looks excellent. The rice cakes are a glucose-based carb source, the banana provides a bit of dextrose in addition to fructose, and skim milk is quite insulogenic as well as bumping up the protein.

i always opt for whole food PWO. a nice baked potatoe with ketchup and chicken breast with bbq sauce does the body good.

the PWO shake is the most overrated thing in bbing.

I have 2 scoops of vanilla Beverly International Mass Maker blended with 1/4 cup of blueberries immediately post-workout, then 45-60 minutes later a meal of chicken(sometimes low sodium turkey breast) and a sweet potato or brown rice.

I've done the dextrose with whey drink before and I felt the dextrose was too much for me and just didn't like it as much as I do the above.

actually, its truly the one thing that has beeen tried and proven..you need a FAST protein and fast carbs for REPAIR and revocery.....youll def. notice the next day.......trust me.

This pwo debate has raged on most every board at some time, and this just shows how controversial it is. Not sure why. In the end, all will gain with proper nutrition, rest and training. But, speeding this process up may indeed be possible.

I am in the dext or malto/prot. camp. I cannot see how taking in some oats, how they would do any good for glucose while sitting in your gut waiting to be digested. There is something to be said though for folks who grind up their oats, this will raise the GI. If you shred the food and increase the rate gatric emptying, this will of course make for more rapid absorption. But, still, in my opinion, at this time, not enough.

That being said, I would submit that the best way to go about this spike is to guage it to your needs. This will have to be done individually, there is no set formula. I propose if you do an all out leg workout, you would need a higher insulin spike to restore order than if you do an arm day.

definitely a sugar/whey PWO shake kinda guy. have been for years, noticed a huge difference in recovery when I do vs. when I don't.

Proven according to what? got studies. repair from microtrauma damage takes days, not a magical hour.
