Niacin and Asprin to raise HDL?

So far niacin seems to be about the only drug that is effective in raising HDL. Luckily it's cheap and available OTC. I usually take 500mg of niacin along with aspirin before I go to bed. During the day I take non-flushing niacin.

By the way aspirin is a good thing to take anyway if you have cholesterol issues. It's believed that aspirin's anti-inflammatory effects reduce plaque accumulation in arteries which may explain why low dose daily aspirin (~80mg) lowers the probability of heart attacks.

Here is what I posted in another thread which is just a few days old...

I've been in the same boat. I had low levels of HDL about a year ago and raised it to 60 (yep...60!) in less than a years time. My LDL is always between 80-100 no matter what (must be good genetics). I need to breakdown all of my test results to get specific timelines etc. on the time between tests. Anyway, here is what I take ED:

3.6g Flax
3.6g Fish Oil
2-3g garlic (preferably garlic with lecithin)

Those about taken ED for about 4-5 months raised my LDL from 20 to 40. When I integrated garlic w/ lecithin and had my blood taken this summer my HDL level was 60.

I have also used:

Policosanol 20mg (during cycle) 10mg off-cycle
500mg flush free Niacin
Red Yeast Rice 1200mg w/ CoQ10 30mg (NOW Makes this - it also has ALA and Milk Thistle in it - dirt cheap)

I also eat tight all the time (at least one serving of fish daily) and take the EFA's (Flax and Fish Oil) religiously. It works.

studies have shown non flush niacin is not effective in raising HDL. The flush immediate release type is although as mentioned above it requires a reletively high dose which can be hard on the liver. I would throw in some tylers and milk thistle.
Curious, were you on orals when you had your test done?

niacin works. I'm using 2 grams a day, with garlic pills, fish oil, policosanol, extra fiber. My HDL is at 68, my total went down from 256 to 225 in 1 month. Now besides supps I'm taking care of my diet, always take care but know extra care with cholesterol levels. My levels are genetic disorder.
