I think the power companies should enforce some sort of mandatory distance a tree has to be from power lines.

They do. At least in this part of FL. They send out these orange trucks with men who cut your trees when they are too close to the power lines. They don't even ask you or tell you. They just do it. This is FPL that does it by the way. Maybe you have a different power company.

I have FPL also but I've only seen them cut down branches that are touching the lines. I'm talking about measuring a trees height and predicting how far it would land if it fell. If it would hit the lines, cut the tree down.
