Hip Impingement surgery

I have hip impingement syndrome in both of my hips essentially due to osteoarthritis associated with being an athlete my whole life (I am only 35!). I am going in for arthoscopic surgery to have the labrum repaired and the spurs removed. Anyone here have that procedure? Doc syas no major exercise for the lower half for 5 to 6 months. i say fuck that! I am wondering what anyone else knows about recovery from the surgery.

good luck - I had a hip fracture about 3 yrs ago and it took me about a year to recover fully if not more - even now any pain in my hip and they send me or an MRI right away. From what I've heard though, what you're going in for you should recover more quickly... ? Hope it all goes well for you.

Not that scary bro. They do have to dislocate my hip to complete the surgery. the scary part is that i will likely need hip replacement by time I am 50. that is very debilitating!

dont stress about what hasn't happened yet...and I know of older people that have hip replacements and have done extremely well very quickly after and wished they had done it sooner

good luck for removing the osteophytes

AND go with your drs advice...ask to be put in physical therapy and run down what you can and cant do with them

My mom had a hip replacement two years ago (osteoarthritis), and it took her at least a month to do more than hobble. But she's not an athlete, and not in great shape.
She did a bunch of physio, and they recommended lots of walking to strengthen up the supporting muscles. They said she could swim too, although she didn't.
The surgery went really well, and it made a major difference in her life. From excruciating 24 hr/day pain to no pain at all. Quick relief from the bone on bone grinding pain once she got home and was coherent.

I had my hip scoped for a torn labrum in 1996 (from soccer and lacrosse) - I was around 23 years old. The surgery was quite new at that time. For the first few months, it was very stiff. A lot of stationary bike riding for several months - it would pop once in a while while the scar tissue was breaking up, which the surgeon told me was normal. I think I used one crutch for a week or so, but can't exactly remember how long.

It's been completely fine since. No problems, and I was still playing in adult soccer leagues up until 2004 (didn't stop due to my hip - moved to new city and never bothered to seek it out).

*Waiting for the Soccer=Pussy comments...

You better not say fuck it bro. Surgeries are serious stuff and if you short circuit the recovery/rehab process you could have permanent remafications you dont want. I speak from experience, and Im 35 also.

good luck!
and i agree with Dave. Take recovery period very seriously. no sense in repairing something then damaging something else.
