Fat people shouldn't be allowed to personal train

Well-known member
there is this fat guy at my gym and i get sick just looking at him. wft, he should train himself first then others. on top of it, he doesn't look like he knows what he is doing. in my whole life i only talked to one person who i thought was a good personal trainer but he had a Dr. in physiology or something.

they need to raise the standards bigtime.

My gym has a lot of fat personal trainers too. About half. But the other half are fit and strong. I guess they give the fat new people to the fat trainers.

Strictly speaking, personal training is a matter of education and experience over appearance. How fat you are should, in theory, not have any bearing on how good a trainer you are. But, from a psychological or credibility standpoint, it just doesn't seem to work. I don't think I could take a fat trainer too seriously, no matter how knowledgeable they were.

They don't screen people out of the classes becuase they are fat/out of shape. (which maybe they should) That person is responsible for their own health/body...and by not setting the example, they will make less money and have less clients.

I would not want a fat personal trainer. I am sure they can do the job just fine but I believe that fit personal trainers provide a lot more motivation just by looking at what they have physically achieved. A fat personal trainer makes me think that it would be to hard to achieve a fit body because they have the knowledge and cannot do it themselves.

It might be better to have a trainer who USED to be fat, or skinny.

Those people have more credibility. Most trainers seem to be the old high school athletes that have always had an easy time gaining or losing weight.

Amen brotha. Being fat is not the key to get clients. They should consider DNP for God sake !

Was he a big guy that just got fat - or just a fat guy?

The bad part is if he doesn't look like he know what he is doing or rather that he doesn't know what he is doing.

That is really what one should be concerned about.
Also, just because someone is knowledgeable about something doesn't mean they have the ability to pass that information succesfully onto another.

What about a skinny flabby person as a trainer? Just as bad?

I dunno.

I don't think you can always judge everything by it's looks - I mean I do it too sometimes but I try and catch myself first.

It's like people and money - just because they look like a bag of rags doesn't mean they aren't loaded and the verse, just because the look the part doesn't mean they didn't go into debit to look that way.

So uh, yah.

:D

If I had a pers. Trainer that was all cut and huge i'd probably be intimidated by the fact of feeling inferior to him. Like would he be laughing behind my back saying haha look at the twirp...And while i was lifting would he yell at me in his deep manly voice c'mon skinny, lift that bar.

That's gonna be me sucka, when I'm a personal trainer...I can't wait to kick some flubbery asses into shape.

the whole personal training profession has been devalued by the commercial fitness industry...that's why you see a lot of fat and unqualified personal trainers. Bally's or 24 Hr Fitness will hire anyone regardless of qualifications, make em read a book, and then VIOLA! they are now "personal trainers". On top of that, they pay em minimum wage.

Good trainers nowadays are very rare. If you find one, you can bet they won't be working at a fitness chain like Bally's or 24 Hour. Good trainers usually work independently or out of Sports performance-type clinics.

HE WAS A GUY WITH A GUT AND MAYBE LONG LONG TIME AGO HE DIDN'T HAVE ONE.

The bad part is if he doesn't look like he know what he is doing or rather that he doesn't know what he is doing.

THE TIMES I HAVE SEEN HIM, IT DIDN'T LOOK IT OR SOUND LIKE IT. HE DIDN'T SOUND LIKE HE GAVE A SHIT ABOUT HIS CLIENT EITHER.

YEP, BUT A LITTLE UNDER WEIGHT OR OVER WEIGHT IS OK, BUT EXTREME IS TOO MUCH.

MY THOUGHTS EXACTLY BUT I STILL WANT TO MAKE LOVE TO YOU UNTIL THE COWS COME HOME :D

I ALWAYS SAY LOOK THE PART MOST OF TIME.

I coudl never be serious about taking ones advice about training if they didnt look halfway decent.....drives me craZY!

This was meant as just a smart ass comment to a degree... I really hate to generalize about people -- one of the most popular trainers at my gym is this skinny little guy who is obviously FLLLLLaming....but the old ladies love him and he helps them with what they need. I've watched him train and he actually does promote the use of free weights and diet to these ladies instead of piles of cardio and low fat food. By the same token, I've had trainers who actually have a good history as bb's but really suck as trainers.

I think a flabby or wimpy trainer is not doing a good job "selling" him/herself, but there are definitely some really excellent, skilled people out there who aren't the physical embodiment of the perfect training regimen applied. Frankly, most of them can train THEMSELVES well, but not other people.. so the whole MY BODY AS A SAMPLE OF MY SKILL AS A PERSONAL TRAINER FOR YOU concept doesn't really mean any thing.

Anyway... just thought I'd throw that out there....

I look at their training portfolio. Good trainers keep both "Before and After" pics of their clients. Here's an example, if Daniel Duchaine came to in a gym and started spewing AS info, cycles and so on, by physical standards you would blow him off and call him a skinny punk. So to answer your question, I would judge by results not appearance.

I agree that overweight people should not be a personal trainer. Someone hires a personal trainer because they are having trouble reaching their target goal. A personal trainer should be well educated and of course fit, you can see the results of hard work and dedication right before your eyes.

thats poppycock. even if the trainer was a total sucker and was ripped id still listen to him over some fat fuck. the ripped guy did something right apparently. real life exp > than a piece of paper. or maybe fat is the new goal??

Ive been a PT for 13 years...

a few of the best trainer i ever worked around were fat.... it really has no bearing at all on ones ability to design effective exercise and dietary programs it just shows a lack of discipline and interest in the application of said knowledge

Look at boxing and mma coachs. THey aren't all in shape, and I would say they are probably not the best fighters. This doesn't mean they don't know how to coach or shouldn't.

Plus how overweight are we talking. 10-20 lbs, big deal - 100 lbs ok I can see point.

I would also add, not all peeps want a trainer who is huge and ripped to shreds.

But then I asked my wife, and she said she would pick the trainer that looks the best. She expects him or her to look the part

I would say this is matter of opinion.

all the good mma coaches have black belts, some just aren't physically gifted enough to compete at the highest level. Others have also been champions themselves though.
