Dislocated shoulder

I dislocated my shoulder almost 2 weeks ago, and it is still too sore to workout. Even feels bigger than the other one. What can I do to speed up the healing process, and how long should I wait till it is safe to start doing upper body movements again?

As far as I know, rest is the only way to heal it. I messed up my rotator cuff by pressing too heavy and I couldnt lift anything for six months. Shoulder injuries are the most common injury in the gym.

don't fuck with it dude.....get a electrical stimulation unit and put ice packs over the electrodes, that'll speed up blood flow to the area and "help" in the healing....but rest is really the only thing you can do. If you don't, you risk popping it out agaiin and then the tendons will further stretch and weaken. You can do bench with just the bar in a couple of weeks, that'll be good to get blood in there and keep the muscle from atrophying.......but heavy bench is out for at LEAST 3 months, and that's if you only had a mild seperation.

I just got over a shoulder injury tha happened almost 2 months ago. I just stopped completely, it was the only way it would heel. I just started up again a week ago and its still tender. Im using machines and very light dumbells right now. goog luck

Call 719-473-7000. That is the practice of Dr. Michael Leahy, the developer of Active Release Treatment. I'm in Denver... when I dislocated my shoulder I was told by the Rockies M.D. I needed surgery. I went to Dr. Leahy in Colorado Springs and was 50% better in 10 minutes. I went back for two more treatments and I was 100%. But I could lift heavily right after my first visit. Call the number and ask for an A.R.T. practitioner in your area.

Also... Ice decreases blood-flow to an area. Heat increases it.

A couple questions

Welcome to the shoulder dislocation club....

Were you able to re-locate the shoulder yourself after dislocating it, or did you have to go to the hospital and have a doctor do it?

If a doctor had to do it, did it pop back in quick, or did he really have to muscle it back in place?

If it went back in easy, then you have stretched the "cup" of the ball and cup joint, meaning you will most likely dislocate your shoulder again in the future, because it is loose. Unfortunatley there is no way to tighten the cup, even with surgery. You can however strengthen the surrounding muscles to help hold the joint in place.

Either way, you MUST go to a physical therapist and learn the rehab exercises. If you don't or you half ass the process, you can count on doing it again. Then surgery will be the next step. Sadly, surgery doesn't always correct the problem. I myself had the Bankhart (sp?) proceedure done 10 years ago, but still dislocated even after the surgery.

I am regretably a member of the 100+ club.

I have a recurring dislocation of my left shoulder.Had surgery 12yrs ago and it dislocated again about 6mths later. Since then I've done it about 1-2 times per year and it has always popped back into place very easily.3 weeks ago it happened again and would'nt go back into place.I ended up in the ER and they relocated(reduced)it rather easily. My MRI results showed that everything is intact but loooose as hell.I dont know if I'll have surgery again or not.sorry for the babbling but I'll gladly accept any advice
