Bonds is a greedy, obnoxious, pretentious, spoiled brat. The man had his chance to come clean yet he lied under oath in an efort to protect his reputation as the greatest slugger in mlb. Federal prosecutors offered him, like Jason Giambi, full immunity from prosecution for any possble steriod charges stemming from the BALCO investigation and yet he still denied he used the drugs.
In his December 2004 testimony to the grand jury he denied using any steroids provided by BALCO through his trainer Greg Anderson. Unfortunatley for Barry, Anderson kept meticulous records indicating what he was giving to Barry and when Barry was taking them. Anderson refused to testify against Bonds though, and had been sitting in prison on contempt of court charges. He was recently released and prosecutors felt they had enough on Barry without Anderson's testimony to prove he in fact did know he was taking steroids.
So they charged Barry for perjury and obstruction of justice for lying to the grand jury. He would have avoided all these legal troubles if he had just told the truth but no, Barry was far too concerned about Barry to let a federal investigation stand between him and the record books.
He had a choice; tell the truth in a court of law as any honorable and good citizen would, or, lie in an effort to preserve the future glory and riches breaking the all-time home run record will bring to him. Barry chose Barry and now he will pay for that choice.
Goodbye recordbooks, goodbye Hall of Fame, goodbye Barry. If he wasn't such a shit of a person I might have felt for the guy but I don't. I'm kinda happy to see it happen, it couldn't have happened to a better guy.
