Hmm, that looks like a lynx to me. Not a bobcat. Lynx are more furry with a lighter sand color, have the distinguished dark black sharply pointed ears and bigger paws than a bobcat. That is a lynx in that pic. Bobcats have a more golden orange fur, and do not have such thick scruffy "maines" like that.




To BBB, that is a raccoon on a log dude. Lol, it's a Mountain Lion broseph.

Cougars/Mt lion (same thing) are much larger(like the size of a retriever), and are a uniform gold or sandy color. You can't see the spotted fur on the sides by the belly that is the trait of a bobcat. Bobcats are about 3x the size of your average house cat. That there is about 8-10 times the size of a house cat.


Bobcats are not near that size. If that was a bobcat, it would be the biggest damn bobcat that ever lived.

The sheer mass in the shoulders and thighs is a dad give away as well. Bobcats are wirey. Not thick like a cougar.
 
When I lived in the Black Hills, I saw a young (maybe 30 pounds) Mountain Lion out behind our house. I've also seen pictures of trapped ones in the area. To me, it looks like a Mountain Lion. That's a racoon he's stalking, right?

Yeah, looks like a Cougar to me.

It is a mountain lion. I have seen up close bobcats and mountain Lions both. I actually stared at a bobcat through a cage at a animal sanctuary. Those things are nasty and pissed off, lol.

bobcats are not nearly as big as what that picture shows.
 
shit...nevermind...I just noticed the big ass cat on the left side of the picture. what the fuck is in the center with the glowing eyes?

We have bobcats in Missouri I see those all the time

I have never seen a mountain lion

or heard of anyone I know seeing a mountain lion in Missouri

that is 100% a bobcat, we have then all over here. most of the time they are scared shitless of human
 
the coon is probably 10-15 lbs, the cat is gonna be 50 at least. Being that ever getting a cougar on film, even by accident, is extremely rare, I'm gona say it's a BIG Bobcat. If it turns out to be a juvinile cougar, it wouldn't surprise me, but that's my vote, big bobcat.

a large bobcat is about 40lbs (around here - northcentral pa - anyway), but they look to be significantly larger than their actual weight. . .

Y'know there wouldn't even be a question if she had just hesitated a second longer and caught the damn thing's ass in the frame so we could see the tail!

Big_bad, I can't believe she take more than one picture?! Who sees a wild cat about to pounce a raccoon and doesn't take more than one shot?!
 
Incidentally, I've since looked up the range of the mountain lion. I'm changing my vote to bobcat.

yeah that's what i was thinking, i'm still waiting to hear back from her to see wether or not it got one of the racoons....she said her night cam got it, so i dont know if she had a video camera running all night or if she took the picture, but yeah, i'm going with mountain lion as well

it's called a jedicoon. they shoot lasers from their eyes which it apears it's about to do. but i'm sure it was using them as flash lights to see in the dark

The thickness and muscularity of the cougar is very obvious and aparent hear. Bobcats do not have thick muscle on their shoulders like that, and they have wirey legs. They do not have thick legs like that.


I know this. (For what it's worth).... I took a Wildlife Biology class in college, and we we're required to identify animals by photgraph for tests. We did a whole section on the felis genus. (for those of you know what a :genus" is, you know what I am talking about) I know what to look for and there is no question it is a cougar. Like I said twice already, The muscle mass of that cat is a quality bobcats do not have. Period. The head is shaped distinctly like a cougar as well. The way the mouth and nose are set in the skull is very cougar-esk.

as a wildlife artist (yeah! I do that in my spare time) I have studied my subjects (a requirement if your gonna hang with the big boys) thats not a bobcat!
The bone structure and muscle mass does not even come close!

Even if that were a fullgrown Bobcat, it would not be twice as long (which it appears to be) as an average sized raccoon (sizes according to Wiki).
I still vote cougar (albeit a juvenile). And yes, too bad the pic was clipped before the tail. The juvenile I saw had a lonnnnnnnng stovepipe tail, it seemed almost as long as it's body.

i'm still going to disagree with you on this. i have seen many many many bobcats in person and killed a few myself. they are most def muscular cats. the spots on this cat give it away. the size that of a larger bobcat, but still not to large to be one. check out this pic, about the same size.

I know this is going to sound like some sci fi channel bullshit, but could that be a hybrid guys? That closeup of the head definitely shows the tell tale bobcat face shag.......but the "shape" of the head looks like something inbetween. The body and coloring are all mountain lion though.

That's a beautiful picture of a cougar. But see what I was talking about, the last pic looks like some sort of cross. Not quite as elongated and elegant as a standard coug, but not as flat and stubby as a standard bobcat.

That is DEFINITELY a COUGAR!!! Holy fuckin shit. That is awesome! They are becoming very rare. They are BEAUTIFUL!

It is not a smaller bob cat. Bob cats have tufts of fur on their faces and are little.

Our mascot in school was the Cougars and we had a real live cougar mascot at all our games.

wtf is everybody getting that all bobcats are little? they aren't all little. they look A LOT bigger than their weight.

I grew up in the country and have seen bobcats. They are generally much smaller than a cougar. We had a cougar as a mascot at our school. The local veterenatian owned her. Anyway, I got to pet her at like every game because I was a cheerleader. She would come out on the court with us even, with the vet watching out for her. She was pretty old and mellow. Anyway, I know what a cougar looks like very well, and that is a cougar. I'm sure of it.

i've killed several bobcats and see them while hunting all the time. correct not as big as a cougar but some of them are bigger than large dogs.

if you see the picture where i circled the side of its head you can see its "side-burns" and also if you look u can see the black stripes behind it's mouth. cougars do not have any kind of black there, usually behind their mouth they are white/gold

I think that looks like a cougar head. bobcats have very short looking necks and are more stubby and tufts on their faces. I've NEVER seen a bobcat as big as what is in that picture. NEVER.

seriously........have u ever seen a bobcat up close.......in real life???? they look a TON bigger than what they weigh, b/c they are so long/lanky. those raccons weigh a max what 10-15lbs and they are solid mass, that cat probably weighs max 35lbs.

Look at the slope from the forehead down the bridge to the snout, looks like a Puma to me.

that's exactly what I was looking at when I concluded it must be some weird hybrid. Bobcats have much flatter faces, look like an overgrown house cat. The head more resembles a cougar, but not quite.......the slope is inbetween. Maybe it's just an optical illusion from the flash???

the black stripes behind the mouth on the blown up picture i post give it away.........................if someone can show me black stripes on a cougar head i'll say i'm wrong (like the names in this pic)

You don't think fur undulations can cause the casting of shadows? Frankly, a profile shot epitomizing the standard shape of a cougar convinces me more than two *stripes* which may be visual abberrations.

I'd much rather discuss why BNG thinks that's not a cheetah, I mean Leopard.
