bobcat or mountian lion

my aunt caught this camping a few nights ago out on her land in missouri. i say it's a mountain lion.

If it is a mountain lion then your aunt needs to contact the local natural society or something because they aren't supposed to be in Missouri, like I said, look at the ranges:

That map is a lil off...Mt. lions go farther east in CO.

and into MO... or maybe the local conservation agents from where I grew up are just crazy?

I just looked at that map, and there's no reason their population should just stop at the MO line, their range covers the ozark mountains in AR but for some reason according to that map they cant cross into MO, even though it's the same mountains?

I know that cougars have been spotted in Eastern Ky in the 60's and 70's too, but I don't think they have since then, but I'm not sure. They aren't supposed to be in Kentucky at all.

We do have bobcats and wild dogs, though.

How do yall know which one Missouri is.... are you smarter than a 5th grader or what! Lets see TX, then AR, what's on the other side of that....

As if a Mt lion cares about what some guy put on a map for it's range. They can go where they please. Maybe it's atypical, but not imposible.

have u ever seen a bobcat in person, like 1ft away?

Yes, and I have a scar from that mean sunnuvebish. A nasty one on my left forearm.

But this MOUNTAIN LION does not look like the bobcat that tried to tear my arm off.

"DO NOT TOUCH!" is a good thing to follow with nervous defensive predators. lololololol

somebody didn't control their heart rate...

You guys are funny.
The pics I linked to were easy to find but in the original series you could clearly see the Bobbed Tail and markings of a Bobcat while stalking and the series showed the attack through the death of the sheep, and it was taken in the Sierra Nevada Mtn. by a game biologist who was studying the decline of the herd.
The first is also clearly a Bobcat and that's a Whitetail. So when some of you are saying that Bobcats are small I wonder.

Oh and one more to think about. They've now documented the Jaguar is back in Arizona!

Official word from Washington County Game Warden is bobcat, around 10-12 years old, losing it's spots.

she took the pic in and had it looked at, not sure if i agree though :)

Check out this article, maybe it'll clarify why its EXTREMELY unlikely it's a mountain lion:

thank you!!!!! i've seen enough of these things i would know. the one true give away is if you blow up the picture you can see two stripes behind the mouth........cougars do not have any kind of stripes on their bodies and are 99% of the time white behind the mouth, down the chest.

That particular census needs to be updated, though. We had a large population of Lions in the Black Hills, big enough that the Dept. of Wildlife introduced a harvesting season. They determined that the area of the Black Hills wasn't big enough to sustain a population this size. Lions were also decimating the imported population of Mountain Goats which is another reason the combination of departments called in trapping contractors to harvest. :(

I found two such massive leg traps just off of a public trail, returned them to the forest service which in turn notified the legal trapper through the engraved, required, and registered ID.

South Dakota Mountain Lion Hunting Season Information

"The 2008 estimate for the Black Hills mountain lion population was between 220-280 lions (adult males, adult females, and dependent young)."

I love cougars. I think we should really try to let them make a comeback. They are our only big cat.

Oh, I absolutely agree but you know everything boils down to money. The Department of Wildlife could export some of the black hills lion population to their more traditional haunts but it's cheaper to solve their localized problem by eliminating them and collecting harvesting monies.

i like them as well but they are some scary fuckin animals when you see them out in the wild. I live in an area they are not suppose to be, but many people in the area have seen them around. Heard a story of someone having a male/female as pets, animal control found out and when they went to take over the cats the guy let them go. They never were caught but many farmers and hunters in the area have see them, they now think they have bred!!!! We are not suppose to have bobcats nor cougars and we have both

We weren't supposed to have cougars in eastern kentucky but we did when I was a kid. I played in the woods EVERY DAY and I never had any of the cougars or bobcats make an appearance. It was only the wild dogs that you would have to worry about hurting people. The cats were only a danger to the livestock.

Comeback? There's so many out here now that the deer & sheep population are suffering and will need rescue, and the elk that were in the Southern Sierras haven't been seen in a couple years. The bear population has come up a lot too.
People act so ridiculous when a cat attacks a human, like they're surprised or something!

I think that the one that is indigenous only to Florida is nearly extinct, isn't it? Otherwise, I didn't know that there were so many. Usually a really good bunch of watchdogs do a good job of protecting the livestock.

Wish they'd export some of them to Pennsylvania. Deer are hooved rats as far as I'm concerned. There are stretches of highway you can go down and pass ten dead dear within less than half that amount of miles. Frigging bleeding hearts have stopped a lot of areas from being hunted ("BUT THEY'RE PRETTY" "THEY'RE NATURAL" "THEY WERE HERE FIRST.") Yeah, pretty, plus they'll eat anything green and most of them are infested with deer ticks carrying Lyme disease.

Yes they most certainly are a part of the natural environment, IN CONJUNCTION WITH THEIR PREDATORS. There's a reason why a deer has 2 calves every year, frigging things are meant to be FOOD.

My dad would go shoot his limit. lol.

Maybe they should up the limit for the deer hunters?

The problem is deer reproducing where there is hunting. We already have to have yearly hunts in state parks.

Neither cars nor hunters are not as effective at herd control as natural predators.

Thats a great way to look at deer, I'll have to develop that mindset everytime johnny comes home with pics of his hunt

I've always kinda felt bad for Bambi's dad. :(

Mountain lion. Short fur, stocky face, white underbelly.
Bobcats are spotted, kinda like snow leopards.

You have no idea how big I smiled reading that comment!
So many peeps have not been out in the wild enough to get it, and have a Disney mentality when it comes to wildlife management (or mismanagement)!
The wolf reintroduction has gone woefully wrong as well. What started off as a plausible approach has gone so far off course it has become it's own problem!
