I've had 2 of them bastards, forget the lawyer! if it's your first take the plea jump through the hoops and move on.

Seeing he has two of them, and is clearly a slow learner... I'd get the lawyer.

i got a public intoxication (on influence of rec drug) and didnt hire an attorney. i didnt think it was necessary, that i would show up to my court date, get a fine and it would be the end of it. i was stunned how harsh the sentence was, and later learned an attorney could have drastically reduced the sentence.

when you try to handle on your own there is typically a court appointed attorney. they are there to help you but dont have the incentive or experience to really help you. most of them are fresh out of law school , have no financial incentive to help their clietn. remember, if your attorney is good, you will recommend your friends. it all comes down to money.

a DUI first timne is a misdemeanor. maybe i missed it but are you under 21? i still dont think its a felony at that age.

it's those random times when dui's happen.
like for instance my friend had three beers with his lunch, crossed a RR track
and got a flat.
as he was fixing it a cop stopped by and bam, shit happens when you drink.
i'm contemplating a quitting for good, i rarely drink so it would be easy

i agree.

if you drink and drive, you may drive as carefully as an old lday. you cant predict someone hitting YOU and you getting cited. its just too risky to take the chance.

you cant imagine how awful getting arrested is until you go thru it. even if its somehting "minor" like a public intoxication. the handcuffs kill your wrists, the cops treat you like , well, a criminal, and jail is dirty and smelly and full of crawling insects.

when you finally get out its a relief after being in there 8-12 hours. but then you gotta deal with your court case. its expensive, and time consuming, and a real hassle to have to deal with it in your normal life.

most of the times you wont go to jail for misdemeanors but you will pay a hefty price in fines and tiomes involved. it could also affrect your job if you get a DUI, or you get a citation that might affect a particular license you have for your business (i.e. contractors license, insurance license, etc)

felonies...thats a whole other story i have not experience in! thjink about it though, if you drink and drive, and hurt of kill someone it could easily BECOME a felony. not to mention the guilt you have to deal with.

There are these wonderful things called street lamps that do a pretty good job of lighting up streets. I know people that sometimes don't realize they haven't turned their headlights on until exiting a parking lot/well lit area whatever. I had driven maybe a block at the most when they flipped the lights on. I didn't even get a chance to realize the headlight was out. I know I am at fault for the prediciment I am in but responses like this are a dime a dozen - I wasn't asking if what I did was bad I already know that so keep your thoughts to yourself if you have nothing constructive to say.

you made your point, but this guy was looking for some support , not judgemetn, from posters who have had similar experiences. he kinow he made a big mistake, and is lucky there was no injury involved. he is wondering what his fate is.

I understand that, and he's gotten it so far. You can't expect to post something like that in an open forum and not expect some flack.

When I think about how many times I rolled the dice when I was younger it scares me now. What scared me straight was being with a friend in the passenger seat when he got nailed. Cops roughed him up, he went to jail and lost his job.

I'll say for sure get a lawyer as well. It was expensive and he still lost his license for six months (mandatory here in Canada) but his charge got reduced to careless driving instead of DUI because it was a first offense. And he blew .18 - way higher than you.
