Actually I just started back this week after a hefty layoff from the gym. Starting off very light and going ass to ankles and training on form and will work my way back up to 5+ plates/side.

yeah. actually, i started like you. but i also started pausing at the bottom of each rep, just for a second or two. this transfered up to my max weights. i see fellas with 5 plates on their backs and they have ROM's of like 5''. i get more of a response with 3 plates, going down until it looks like my knees are in my armpits.

Personally for me it feels a bit better to go just below parallel, everyone has different methods but that works for me and I never lockout at the top.

nah. i don't use any equipment. i might break out the straps for my heaviest sets of shrugs or db rows or even for pin pulls, but the only thing i really ever use is a belt. i feel that the tightness is important. i'm a pretty lanky guy, too. 6'3'' with a pretty big reach, like 74''.
