Is it wrong for Landlords to discriminate

Razorguns

Single moms, blacks, immigrants, etc.?

And dont' act like it doesnt' occur. Try calling to rent a room with a thick jamaican accent in suburbia :)

TheStar.com | GTA | Landlords trample on tenants' human rights

But when a landlord looked her in the eye and coldly said he didn't rent to teens with babies, the truth hit like a slap in the face. As a young, black, single mom on welfare, nobody wanted to rent to her.

btw: in la, it's the opposite. whites or blacks can't get apts in apartment complexes that are 99% mexican. God bless america! lol

why would someone think a landlord, or owner of an item or place be required to rent to anyone that they deem not capable of repaying for the services rendered.. based on race?? credit?? life experience??

You're a jewish man. Would you rent your basement apartment or one of your 5 units to a young black male?

Stereotypes exist for a reason. Not every young black man is going to smoke pot all day and be a gang banger...unfortunately about 80% are.

Bottom line, it is up to the property managers. They have a right to CHOOSE who they want living in their building. One persons discrimination is another persons preference. If I don't think they can pay the rent consistently, why go through the headache of potentially getting back rent owed and having to evict someone? It's my property.

That article was pretty one sided because it is written by the bleeding hearts. When landlords get rent defaulted on they have nowhere to go because if they try to sue it costs more in court fees than the 1-2 months of rent they are owed so they get screwed. Publish the stats for how many single moms, blacks or other minorities default on their rent.

as always, the good have to suffer for the actions of the bad.

i'll answer.

i have a rental and a young black man shows up to rent it, right?
what does he do for a living? is he... a plumber? yes, i'd rent to him. Is he a stock broker? yes. Is he... a grocery store clerk? no. A single parent on welfare? no.

i don't care what color he is- i wouldn't rent to someone who couldn't pay their rent, or who i felt was dangerous, or who i thought wouldn't take care of the apartment, or might have too many friends over, etc.

My father in law has several rentals that I collect the rent for....guess who never has the money and or skips out and trashes the house and or has 8 pit bulls living in the house with them???

He finally listened to me...stopped renting to blacks and mexicans a year ago and have not had one person even be late on their rent.

I grew up in homes where my parents always rented and IMHO the landlord has EVERY RIGHT to decide exactly who can/can't live in the houses/buildings THEY OWN.

Why?

Because it is the landlord's responsibility to repair and make the payments to the bank... NOT the tenant's.

My ex and I also rented his condo for a short-time before we finally were forced to let it go into foreclosure. Firstst year we rented to two young black men. Rent was never late and they abided fully by the terms of their lease. Then we got desperate (the neighborhood REALLY declined) and rented to section 8. First was a single welfare mother with 3 kids and 10 different baby daddys. We had to evict her and she trashed the place. Second section 8 was a white couple - total trash. We had to evict them and they trashed the place.

We got tired of the bullshit and the property value had gone so low to the point where it would NEVER recover. My ex bought the place (against my advice) for 110K. At that point it was valued BELOW 40K and was ALL welfare - NO HOPE OF RECOVERY EVER.
