Best way to tell someone they can't stay?

Got a call today from a female friend of mine (also an ex girlfriend from years and years ago) who was visiting her sister and is driving through town on her way home to her husband about four hours away. Haven't seen her in about a year so I told her we would go for dinner to catch up.

She's not getting here until late (about 8pm) and from the conversation she referred to driving early in the morning, meaning she seems to think she's spending the night here, which can't happen. First of all, my girlfriend would not be happy and second of all, I have to get up at 5am to work and can't be bothered entertaining.

So what's a somewhat nice way to tell her she needs to take off after dinner so I can go to bed? I really don't want her staying here. K for good responses.

Ask her if she was planning on staying the night first. for sure.

if so, then just be honest and tell her about your girlfriend and how it wouldnt be appropriate but that you still want to meet for dinner

ask her to stay for a 3-some. Either you'll scare her off, or you may have some fun. Either way you look at it it is a win/win situation.

LOL!

Or you could just ask her what hotel she is staying at

Why don't you just tell her the truth? Basically what you just said. And if you don't feel comfortable telling her, email her that way you will be able to organize your thoughts better.

Are the 3 of you going to dinner? I"m just curious, its probably not gonna be appropriate to have dinner alone with the ex, I mean I have done this, but when the shoe is on the other foot, yeah not kewl. As long as you just be honest with the ex, I mean it has been years. Just explain to her that you really are looking forward to seeing her and the 3 of you should have nice time out. Second, you have to let her know its not kewl as an ex to sleep over. Like you have to explain why.... its not like you guys were Pikes or SAEs or whatever frat. So, be enthusiastic about catching up, which you should be... I hope anyway. As long as you are honest, she will understand. The more secretive you are about it the more likely the night will be flat out weird.

After dinner, stand up, leave her with the check and say "Bitch be gone."

Just be honest. It goes a long way.
