Why do fools lie about their bench?

it seems that there still is the myth that the "BENCH" is everything

and this leads to a purpensity of lies, I have this one kid come up to me and explain that while he has only been lifting for 6 months and weighs bout a buck fifty he flat benches a wopping 300 pounds. I felt like saying lets see it right now, but I really just wanted him to stop talking to me and broadcasting "what do you think about dbol?" as loud as he could...

why lie?

lol, what a fucking moron. This fuckin dumb kid in high school that was about 5'11, 140lbs said he could bench 250. I said oh yeah? Thats pretty good. Then I said thats crazy for someone your size, I dont know if I believe you. I then asked him to prove it and he said ok, I do it all the time. We then went over to the bench press and put 250lbs on, he looked shocked like he never saw a bar with that much weight on it before. I told him to do it and I would spot him. Well he couldnt get it off the rack so I helped him get it off. I still wanted to show him he couldn't do it so I let him try it. He lowered it so fast it just hit his chest and it didnt budge at all, it didnt even bounce. I then lifted it off him and he said, holy shit thats heavy, and I said, well thats 250lbs. Fucking dumb kid.

LoL, ive seen that before

The bench has become like the dick. Those with nothing like to spout off like they've got a big one, and those of us with a big one keep our mouths shut and unleash it only when appropriate.

I love to see shit like that, kids thinking they can bench huge numbers beacuse they did it on a nautilus machine, so that is equal to free weight....lol

LOL everyone is caught up in how much they can bench it seems.
I was into powerlifting and got my bench up to 330lbs(without my bench press shirt by the way)@165lbs body weight. I hit 350lbs@165BW in a competition(with my bench press shirt) and about 3 weeks before comp I hit 365 with my shirt on and hit 300x2 raw. At the time I felt strong as hell blah blah blah. Now I dont train as a powerlifter and I am more concerned with my overall strengths and health, hell I even started running. It feels sooo good not to worry about making my bench press or squat or whatever go up. I enjoy making everything go up and improving all around.

:FRlol:.....I was shopping today and some young kid asked me how much I benched......I looked at him and I don't bench....he seemed astounded and then asked "how'd you get so big".....I answered "lots of sit ups and push ups!"

Not that I care how much people lift, but I'm much more impressed by how much guys can squat or deadlift

i dont know why noone believes that i bench press 953 lbs

you believe me dont you?

so youre the world record holder! wow, its a privilage to meet you!!

I was in a gym where a guy who probably weighted about 120, was benching 115, between a set was explaining to his "chatting partner" about his 600# leg presses, I told him flat out that was bullshit because thats what I repped with, and was twice his size. He shut up after that, hmm!

even if i was doing 600# presses and someone twice the size of me called bullshit id prolly shut up too

The people that brag about their bench press do so because you could never tell by looking at them.

What is worse than the fools who lie about their BP, are those that actually think they are doing a BP right. You know the ones... that have their ass/lower back a foot off the bench, legs pinned to the ground, lower the bar maybe 6 inches down and back up. After about 4 reps of grunting, they take a big gasp of air, jump up, stick out their chest and look around to make sure someone watched them. What amazes me is that it is like some big accomplishment that they have just down 225 for 4 times(???). Yeah, a monday evening is a classic case.....you can always count on seeing this at least one time.

Two words

"EGO"
"INSECURE"

those are the only two words that come to mind, The next time anyone says they can bench 300 and they wiegh 150 wet, tell them to show you, that is unreal and youd like to see....then you will hear about 20 excuses.

Next ask them how much they squat!! then tell him to squat down and suck you dick....Lying idiots.

I'll believe it when I see it, he was probably 5'3" and 120 or so. Probably 80% of the guys in that particular gym were 18-20 years old, small, and of course believed that they were hot shit because they have been lifting for a month.

Go in there, do your shit, dont spend 3 hours telling everyone what a big strong motherfucker you think you are :D

For the record I'm not all that either, been lifting hard since may (comeback time), and bench ~330. When I see guys in there doing 6 inch leg presses, I want to see proof that there is a full range of motion from guys half my weight.

I'm a 475'er. BUT who the fuck cares. I could give a crap about strength as long as I look huge hell that's the only thing I care about! People have turned the bench into a judging tool.

Example: Look out here comes Joe Blow don't fuck with him he benches 400lbs.

What the hell? It's so high schoolish.

Well back in High School I once benched 850 in my garage on a WalMart weight set with my mom watching..... I would do it now for you, but I have this old neck injury thats acting up today............... So I'm just gonna go hit the power rack to do some high rep curls instead....

screw

all you lucky bastards. If I bench I don't sleep(rotator cuff pain is a bitch).

Close grip is all I do. 375 for 10 reps. I'm quiet and don't talk in the gym, but when folks see me do that they want to talk. Its to the point where most people that bench lets say 400-500 all show up on one day to bench, but not me. I don't even like to have people see what I'm working with because I know they are like "whats he on". So I usually go when its only a few people by the benches. Only one of my partners have seen me do it and he just shook his head and laughed. To be honest I haven't really tried to go up anymore. I started at 350 for 1 with close grips(7months ago, made it to 350 for 10 after my first cycle)) and feel this is enough of an increase for now, anymore and I'm asking to get hurt.. Maybe in the spring I will go for 400x 10, maybe not.

I will say this, when you really do get to that heavy weight you will spend alot more time NOT IN THE GYM. That shit puts major stress on your body, big fucking difference between 375 and 315. Used to get buy on 2 on 2 off now I need at least 8 days rest.

I know that aint alot weight in the louis westside club, but in my gym it is.

or its the fucking assholes that see you are huge, or that you are a muscular person beyond normal standards, that say, "so- whattya benchin' " .

Whats wrong with curiosity, I dont see how that makes someone an asshole for asking, if you dont want to answer then dont. If they ask you in the middle of a set, thats fucking different.

I agree though, who cares if they ask, dont answer if you dont want to. But I do agree that its the token question when it comes to weight lifting.

my bench is crap but my chest looks pretty good but i do hate these bullshitters or those guys you see benching while their spot is doing upright rows with the same weight

Why is it so hard to believe that someone who weighs 160 can bench 300lb's? I weigh 158 and bench about 290. The only reason I know my max is because for school (when i used to take a weights class) they made us max all the time. Like that was all that mattered. Everything we did revolved around our max. It was total bullshit, so needless to say I dropped that class and lift at my gym now.

what i would like to know is why guys that weighs a buck fifty can stand around in their wife beaters and upsidedown backwards visors and shoot everyone looks when they are benching 135lbs. and why a guy of that stature can go to a gym wearing a wife beater and no one says a thing to him. but a guy who has size and looks good, wears one and everyone gives him shit about showing off.

It all comes back to vanity and insecurity.Guys that put up alot of weight are usually quiet. They have nothing to say to anyone else, work hard and leave. They have nothing to prove to anyone else. Are strong people showing off when they lift heavy sums of weight?not usually as they need alot of wieght just to maintain a size that they worked hard to acheive.

I'm presonally at the point where I don't goto the gym as much as I once did.I go there when my shoulders and knees aren't hurting so much.Heavy weight is blowing em out.I don't pay any attention to other people. If your the man everyone pays attention to you.

For my strenght i am a pretty small guy. Most people that see me bench or do any exercise are usually like wow. I will have to admit that it is a pretty good feeling to be as strong as someone twice your size. i dont see anythingh wrong with that, and i never brag about my bench or strenght for that matter.

IMO, i couldnt give a shit how much someone can lift.........i just care about how i look when i'm doing it........i would be more impressed with a guy doing 250 in perfect form rather than some idiot with 4 plates bouncing and throwing the shit all around

I hate when guys will ask do you lift and then you'll be like ya and they'll go what do you bench so they can lie and say they bench how ever more than you like there the man. When ever anyone asks me I'm just like I have no idea I don't max out and I leave it at that keeps them guessing...

My thoughts exactly!

Get a load of this...

My nieces boyfriend started asking me questions yesterday. First he asks me what i shrug. I tell him i do 225lbs barbell shrugs for 10 reps (3 or 4 sets). Then he tells me that he can shrug 800lbs. on the machine for reps, but only 400lbs in free weights.
Then he asks, "how much do you squat?"
I tell him, "frankly i don't do squats." "I hate them and only do them over the summer."
Then came the dreaded question, "whatcha bench?"
I told him "i not sure of my 1 rep max, but i workout with 235lbs for 3 sets of 5 reps."
Then he tells me i need to do squats to get my bench up.
"Ya, i know" i say, "but i just don't like to work out my legs."
He says "but you could easily add 20lbs to your bench if you squat."
"I know, I know." I say, "i'm just lazy."
So then i ask him, "what do you squat?" and he says
"I don't squat either."

and the moral of the story is.......... both of you are lazy asses with little chicken legs. :p

no offense but i doubt you'll see many people bouncing four plates and if they do they wont be for very long.......a good friend of mine at the gym benches 5 plates a side and that is alot more impressive than 250 "controlled" whatever that is........

True, I'm sure he was exaggerating to get his point across, but when I see that I start to think it is more drugs than training hard. I haven't seen anyone that strong yet in my new gym, but I do know there are at least a couple who are in the 4xx's. I should be there in a few months :D

Well i'm just the oposite ,I dont like to see anyone let down when they confuse machines and free weights ,but i dont like them guys in my face acting bad either lol . Anyway i went out to eat the other night with my family and people i didnt even know was coming up to me and asking man how much you bench i would tell them i dont know i dont just go train to see my what my max bench is but i can knock out a set of 10 with 315 lbs on most days and then they would just go oh, like they thought i should be doing reps with 500 these people dont realize how much 315lbs is to most people esp for 10 reps, idiots and i'm a little guy.

Thats still about a 400# bench, people don't seem to realize that reps take some work!

hey bro.....my buddy will be the first to tell you it was the sauce.....thats not the point....the point is is once you get to a certain point you cant cheat the weight up.....that guy is saying he'd rather see 250 benched perfect form well im saying that if youre gettin 4 plates your form is already perfect cause you cant cheat at that weight.

I get it, sust got me 65 pounds on my bench, and now I'm slightly above that. Cheat the weight up? LoL... Bouncing is one thing, half reps (I see that all the fucking time), strength and size are not always 1:1, I have no idea if I look like the strength level I'm at (neither of which are that great).
