Currently on my cutting routine i am doing about 15-20 minutes of fast-paced rowing followed by about 35-40 minutes of the elliptical with alternating normal pace + about 30 second bursts of very high RPM to use that HIIT =].

i was wondering what are your thoughts on which is best to use to lose alot of fat and the least muscle? and please state why you think this...

i usually play basketball about once a week too since its fun and i dont consider it a grueling workout =].

i like hitting a stationary bike a few times a week, mainly for about 10 minutes before my workout to get the blood pumping, ive noticed a big difference in lifting performance.

I hit the exercise bike for 15 minutes to warm up and then I do my weights four times a week. I also hot the treadmill 6 times a week, usually do 2-3 miles. On gym days I do the treadmill after the workout. It seems to be helping me a lot. I have a bad knee so I can't do the elliptical. I think if you spent 30 minutes on a treadmill and compared it to 30 minutes on an elliptical machine you would find that you burn more calores on the elliptical.

Treadmill for me is the best....

I do what you do alternating speed.... It always gives quick results...

If I want to lose some water weight fast, 2-3 hours of Full Court Basketball always kicks my ass

I can't push myself as hard in the gym for cardio then I can with people at work on the Basketball Court. Don't want to be embarrased by being the slowest, you know. It is great for shedding excess water weight fast. Nothing like sprinting for 2-3 hours up and down a court, with breaks of course.

I come close to puking everytime we play.

I actually read something a while back that said the treadmill was the best for losing fat and an overall cardio workout.

This made perfect sense, because of how they explained it. They said that it was because more muscles were being worked on the treadmill, like to hold yourself up, vs sitting down, just don't grab onto the handles like some cheaters on the treadmill.

I'd say the treadmill for the reason above, basketball would be alot like it, but it would be harder to keep up a consistent pace in basketball.

basketball probably allows you to hold more muscle because your jumping, moving, sprinting...its like a full body workout and HIIT combined.

Depends on your goals and how you like to do your workout i guess.

I play lots of basketball and i also use a ski machine, eliptical, and treadmill. All are used depending on my mood and how hard of a workout i feel i need to get in, along with how sore i am from the previous workouts.

I think its best to combine them all for best results, that way you arent stuck in a routine.

Plus 1 more, you said you enjoy it so you are more likely to keep doing it,
vs doing cardio on a machine that you hate.

they all burn excess calories where needed, I don't think any of them are 'superior' for fat loss.

I honestly can get just as lean if not leaner just through lifting + diet..

i personally like rowing the best out of those, but swimming is the best option for cardio/fat loss.
What do you usually do for a swimming workout? do you just do laps or some type of HIIT? I have a pool at my gym and would like to start using it to break the monotony of cardio. I just get intimidated when I walk in there and everyone is like wearing caps and special suits.

If we're talking about greatest fat loss while retaining the most muscle, then its probably whatever you can do while maintaining 65-70%mhr for a half hour to an hour. My cardio is very rountine, if not somewhat boring. 15 minutes on the stairmaster, 15 minutes on elliptical, then 15-20 minutes walking on the treadmill at an incline.

really doesn't matter. but always go for the one that also builds muscle if u can.

bottomline: if at the end of the workout, you're DRENCHED with sweat - ur doing ur body justice.

if not - doesn't matter what u did. isn't gonna do u shit.

Call me bizarre, but I always have music on when doing cardio, say if you liked dance music, and the song warms up into another bit, the kind of music with loads of energy, that gets me absolutely sweating my back off, I put much more effort in this way because it's as if i'm dancing lol, the music really gives you the drive. This will work with anything, my prefered choice is on the bike, because i'm lazy, lol

That's what the elliptical would have you believe. But running burns more cals for sure.

Real Running number 1
the Revolving Stair case number 2
Real Biking number 3
Biking in gym upright number 4

Barbell complexes
kettlebell complexes
keg clean and press
sled drag
stadiums
sprints (on a track or field)
I like doing stuff that gets me outside of the gym. I like these above mentioned things not only for there ability to make you feel like making street pizza, they also build muscle. Peace

I hate running, so I'd opt for walking on the treadmill or elliptical. I've had success in the past using the elliptical to lose fat, but of course I was on it for 45-50 minutes and watched my heartrate. I think the elliptical is alot more fun too. Plus, at my gym, the elliptical machines are behind the treadmills, so I get to watch all the girls do their walking/running ;) Makes for a good concentration booster

haha, i do that too, but other then that i mostly play basketball after i workout. Only bad thing about basketball is that its pretty easy to injure yourself if your doing a lot of jumping. I fractured my growth plate when i was younger playing ball, foot was sideways when i hit the ground casue ing me to smash into it.

Hey, I think Swimming will gives you a better results :artist:

Even I was too fat.... But I reduced my weight by Swimming, Evening Walk, Morning Jog, little bit exercise and so on..... :chomp:

Even I opted herbal medicine which gave a awesome result just within 30 days.
No diet, No stop eating of junk food, Ice-creams, Chats..... :p

But the result was 100%

DAmn.... A lot of misguided thinking here.

Some answers were right but they just get overlooked, never to be noticed again. wtf?

First I will say I'm no expert, but there are some basic principles to live by. Cardio is just cardio... making your heart work at a certain level. DOESN'T MATTER what the hell you do, as long as your heart rate is xx or xxx or whatever your goal is at that moment. Walk, run, swim, row... it DOESN'T MATTER.

NOW, what DOES matter is the MUSCLES being worked in addition to the walking or swimming. YES swimming works more muscle than wlaking or possibly more intense, but that is not the point of cardio. LIFTING WEIGHTS should be what works your muscles, not swimming or rowing etc... Do you want a huge back from a rowing machine? Do some deadlifts for that. Rowing should be for cardio, swimming should be for cardio, running etc... Don't combine the two things together. Do cardio for cardio's sake and lift weights for muscle building's sake.

IF you don't workout or have time etc... then by all means, swim for a good effect, but if you want an all around training program, then lift weigths AND do cardio. Actually, depending on metabolism etc.. you may not even need cardio for fat loss. blah blah...

Fuck!

I'll be in chat if anyone wants to fight.

Again, honestly, I don't know my shit, but these are BASIC principles everyone should know.

Go read the replies again and see who gave the right answers.

Fuck, I'm getting banned now!

Hi everybody:) I'm new here and I'm not sure where to look yet for an answer. Is it true that if I want to run to loose wight on treadmill I should be carefull to not loose muscle? Tnx.

Yes, it's true.

Visit the training board as well as here. Good luck.

I'm gong to disagree here and say that heart rate does matter. It is the an indicator of how much blood your muscles are using, which is an indicator of the amount of oxygen being used for energy utilization (measuring VO2 from the lungs would be more correct). It will take much more time to burn the same amount of calories when the heart pumps at 70bpm compared to 140 and plus you won't be getting.

I do completely agree that the heart is not using much energy compared to the rest of the body.

As for the topic, I believe running outside is the best because you have to throw and then catch yourself during each step whereas on a treadmill you're more or less keeping pace. I like to do HIIT style workouts on the track because I can truly sprint a lot faster compared to the treadmill.

However, I gauge my workout by calories burned and not time or distance, so I end up using the treadmill the majority of the time.

45 minute weight workout with only 1 - 1 1/2 minute rests between sets with keeping the weights as heavy as possible. Your heart will be beating high the entire time.

actually without a heart monitor you will not know when your bp has been normalized..

with low rep/high weight resistance training..

example..

Mine is or goes to 157 during exertion, and at 125 i am recovered.. my resting hr is 52.. so during the entire time i am training i am working out in an anarobic state..

and you can use 30 - 45 seconds as a "guess" but without the monitor you are just guessing..

I dont really do cardio in the gym, for cardio mainly I ride my bike but sometimes do running, although it hurts my joints Im kinda a heavy kid. Then again Im not exactly slim so maybe my fat loss experience isnt accurate lol

I would agree that lifting is the best option. However from what you've listed, basketball. You can run much longer when you're thinking about the game rather than how much you hate the f*ckin treadmill

playing basketball at full speed will slap you into shape...and kill some calories. in HS i did XC, in college im doing some warball games, indoor soccer and basketball every once in a while.

I think A powerful way to lose weight is to make healthy eating automatic. The way I achieved that was by shopping and eating primarily from this.
