When taking ALCAR do i still have to take L Carnitine?

I was just wondering if once the L carnitine was acetylated (alcar) did it keep it's functions of it predecessors (L carnitine) plus more, or did it become something different with similar resemblance? Because i didn't know whether to take ALCAR and L-Carnitine together, or does ALCAR already function like L carnitine +
