So I pay my car off in March and guess what

that's a bold statement considering you really don't know shit about cars and there are about 24 other things to check before suspecting the rare failure of an oil pump

you're such a manly man!!!

has anyone asked her if the noise is relative to RPM's?

or if her oil light has flickered but failed to stay constantly lit?

how about the source of the noise? top or bottom?

valve adjustment? rod bearings?

wtfbbq??!

what color smoke, if any?

omgawd!!

Going by her statement: "But when the service writer heard the sound he went and got the foreman and as soon as I revved the motor he knew right away. I looked at his and said I blew a rod right? he said no not yet........"

one would assume rod knock. i.e. rod-end bearing failure eminent. Usually that's the result of a lack of lubrication.

As for whether or not I know shit about cars, how many engines have you torn down and re-assembled?

I would rather have a new engine with a Warranty. I could get a used one but I don't want to do that. I may just have to pay 5 grand (ouch, my ass is hurting already)

If yours has block damage and can't be repaired, a rebuilt shortblock should be fine, buying a new crate engine for an economy car with 91K miles is silly.

Hopefully it could get by with a bottom-end rebuild, just a new crank (since the old one is probably scored) and slap some bearings on it and be done.

Don't do more than what it takes to correct the immediate problem and get the car back on the road.

Oh, and in the meantime, stop driving the car completely. Get a rental.

wow, I had roughly the same issues..Payed off my Honda, got to enjoy it being ours for awhile then GONE...Sucked ass...
How the hell did you blow the engine in a toyota?
Well if you are going to replace it then call around, see what you can do. Maybe you can manage to get a new but old engine...With toyota it really does not matter what you put in it, they are usually excellent and go forever.
If you do decide not to replace it, then dont sell the car off to a junk yard. they will pay minimum..Best option if you are getting rid of the car is to part it out, you will make more money.

what kind of toyota is it?
hammys 2000 celica needs a freakin transmission thing and its got like fuggin 55k miles

ok covergirl i have been over this in my mind.
you see, i drive a 91 astrovan. I mean its got its probs. when you turn on the signal light, the windshiled wiper comes on once
the cd player doesnt work worth a crap
when you go over 55mph the check engine light comes on. it has for 3 years now
when you are at a redlight it jerks when its idling
and the biggest thing, it uses a shit load of gas, and not just any gas, MIDDLE grade.
i mean im dreading filling it back up because its gonna cost me 80 bucks
but in the grand scheme of things, id like to have a new vehicle but then i think. the AC works, the radio no matter how shippy, it works too. it doesnt leak oil. it doesnt leak anything
and if im ever in a wreck, id rather be in that baby than most any new vehicle.
i mean if i hit a tractor trailer or something, im dead. but you get my drift
so, i went thru a stage of wanting a new car, but basically id rather pay to have my van fixed if it tears up, unless it IS the motor
but think about it, if you fork out 5k, i mean your car will almost be like new
and you could drive it for 8 more years
keep the car, i would
yaya

i had a car back in 1999 that i was 1 payment from paying it off. i got into a huge accident and the car was totalled. so instead of paying it off i got screwed and got $2500 from the insurance and had to use that to buy another car and 5 more years of payments. that car was in perfect condition.

btw, i wouldnt take my car to a dealer ever for service. go to at leased 3 different shops and DONT tell them what you were told by the other shop cause they will just go out, smoke a cigarette and come back and say "yup, thats it, how much did they want to fix it?" when you tell them they will try and beat the price which is too high anyway.

if you lived near here id change the engine for you. $5000 isnt the cost of the engine, you can get a brand new engine for about $1500 or less, its the labor that kills you.
