Repair and prepare - my journal on the road back to 5x5

Looking forward to hearing about the new diagnostics. That electro treatment sounds bizzare. Did he tell you anything about what it was supposed to be doing?

He told me, but at that point I was sweating profusely and gritting my teeth, so I didn't really take any of it in. I asked him again later and all he really said was that it's for soft tissue injuries. He wasn't really convincing, but like I said last week, I'll try anything (maybe just the once with this one).

But on the way back to the car, it felt like most of the pain in that localised area had gone. The muscle still felt tight and there was some surrounding pain, so it seemed to work to some extent. Question is, how long will it last?

I've just got back from the hospital. I got chatting to the nurse that did me (said the bishop to the actress), and she managed to get a doc to take a look at the x-ray slide immediately. Good news - he said I'm perfectly normal. Whilst I'd like to find a reason for the pain, I should be thankful that it's nothing serious. With no skeletal issues, I ought to have many years of squatting and pulling ahead of me, once I figure out what's wrong. She suggested seeing a physio next.

After the hospital, I walked around for a good hour or so, doing some shopping. After a while, I realised my leg wasn't hurting any more. It's still ok now. Flexibility isn't an issue and the pain is much reduced.

I don't care whether it's because of all the walking, the electic shocks, the ice pack that I tried last night, or even if it's psychological because I have the x-ray results (not that I was worried in the slightest). See what I'm like later and tomorrow...

A physio might be a sensible next step. He'll show you yet more stretches and blast you with the theraputic massage machine, sometimes known as the bum-wobbler.

It's always good to be told that you're in perfect condition but it doesn't help at all in finding a way to resolve your problem. After everyone has given you a clean bill of health, there's not much else you can do but get back to the weights and try to strengthen your core and posterior chain. You seem to be following the same road that I trod only to find no resolution but to train hard and sensibly and learn how to massage and crack your own back to remove the knotty tensions from slight misalignments.

The nurse said it could be a knot in the muscle.

I've just found a physio and booked a session next Thursday. I'm feeling upbeat about this. The end is in sight.

I wondered about just starting to squat, but according to the chiro, my hips just won't stay straight, so I'd be squatting on a crooked base. I sometimes wonder whether he's lying, but that's probably not being fair on him. He is trying and he's not doing any harm. Well, most of the time.

I didn't do any core work today. I could make up excuses, but you've heard them all before.

I'm enjoying HST, but I can't wait to get up to some heavier weights. My bodyweight's gone down about 5lbs in 3 weeks and my arms and chest don't seem to be shrinking, which is good. My gut doesn't seem to be shrinking either though. Something must be getting smaller :worried:

Hope you like the new format. Cheers BW ;)

I've lost enthusiasm for the core work. I just want to get my leg fixed. I've started a 'leg diary' to help me spot patterns of what makes it better or worse. It's always too painful to stretch in the mornings. At other times, if it's painful to stretch, I can usually try again a few minutes later and it'll be easier. It's usually painful whilst walking, but tolerably so.

Everything hangs on what the physio can do on Thursday. I have an appointment with some lady called Natasha. If she can't help my leg, she'd better be pretty ;)

I hope the journal's not too depressing. I'll make up for it once I'm back on my feet. Promise :)

Another damage limitation workout.

The cutting's been remarkably easy. I haven't done any cardio; I'm just cutting the food down to a sensible level. Same ol' protein and fats in most meals, just less carbs. I've been setting a target weight each week, 0.5kg/1lb less than the previous week, and I hit this week's weight today. I think I can see a small difference to my gut, but I've a way to go yet.

Physio tomorrow. I mentioned it to the chiro tonight and he seemed a bit upset that his regular Wednesday pm income might be disappearing. He was also upset that I wasn't going to let him electrocute me again. I remembered the name of the device this time: the InterX 5000.

I tried unsupported rows Monday night - got up 205 for 4x8.

My back is now hurting again. Hoo-fucking-ray. I'm never doing unsupported again. There's no benefit over chest-supported or one-armed dumbbell rows. Stupid, stupid mistake.

Luckily, I can still do stuff. I just noticed the unbearable pain last night and took off work tonight to make sure I heal entirely.

I think I'd prefer Ibuprofen to that thing. You'd expect that they'd offer some theraputic benefit beyond "pain relief".

My chiro hit me with ultrasound a few times, apparently to relax the muscle, and turned out to be a qualified acupunturist which he did on me a couple of times. The InterX 5000 seems like it ought to be shaped like a duck to make the sound of "quack" more reasonable.

I'd take it as a sign that the chiro has tried everything he knows.
