orthopedic question re dumbell curls

i was recently out of town and worked out on a guy's home gym. i have bad tendonitis in both wrists and stick entirely to hammer curls. this guy had the dumbell bars with plates, rather than the fixed weight type at most gyms. it occurred to me, for my hammer curls, to put all the plates on one side of each dumbell. this way, theoretically, by alternating your grip (with the weights on teh bottom of your fist one set, then on top the next), you get your forearms more involved. anyone ever tried this? any potential hazards i'm not thinking of?
