Do you think you have what it takes to serve the community?
Ombudsman will be the loneliest position on the site, after Administrator...
The Moderators will not be your friends. You must enter their forum and speak out against one or all of them on behalf of the membership.
The members will hate you if you turn them away because you find their complaint to be frivolous and without basis.
you would be expected to do the right thing, all the time. Friendship will not be the reward.
I don't think it has to alienate a person if done with a certain amount of fairness to all sides. if people respect you as someone who is level headed and unbiased - not towing the party line on either side - you can handle both frivilous and valid complaints with enough grace to prevent it from being like that.
I think it would be important to pick someone who already has respect that respect, both from mods and members, someone who understands that creating conflict and drama does not lead to solutions. Being a voice for a member who has a complaint desn't mean you have to go about it in a combative way.
You can better bet that the powers that be would never make me a mod, mentor, ombudsman, city council member, mentor to mentor liason, deadlifters anonymous team leader, etc, etc. Never would happen in a zillion years. ;-)
