Non-stop coughing

Shot in the dark.

My 70 y/o dad, once again, has a cough that won't go away. Coughs every 60 seconds, two weeks straight. Went to the doctor and got some meds - but not helping. He had this last year, but finally went away after 2 months. I hate seeing him suffering and not being able to enjoy life.

Any suggs?

I remember you telling us about that last year. Have you tried suggesting that he see another doctor? Every sixty seconds, yeah...there has to be a way to figure out whats going on there.

Yeah, he tried. specialist said to wait 2 weeks and see if current medication from family doc works or not first. Then might take 2-3 weeks to get an appt from that point on.

Welcome to socialist medicine in canada. The canadian healthcare cheerleaders should be proud.

That hydro cough syrup sounds good

Is it a dry cough?

May want to try little things like having him take fish oil supplement, could give a slight enough anti-inflammatory effect and help him out. How is his diet? May want to switch that up to.

There is a virus that causes damage to a nerve in the voicebox that can trigger a mystery unproductive cough. My Dad had something similar, and it disappeared. Even after having chest xrays and junk, trying all medications etc they still couldn't stop the cough and I remember reading something about that...it disappeared just like that before we got to that point but if that's what is is, they do have meds that can deal with that sensation. I guess it can come and go too...I don't really remember much about it, sorry. He described it as a tickle but it seemed like there was nothing causing the tickle and the coughing fits were terrible, he couldn't speak. Strange. I hope your Dad can get this resolved quickly and get back to enjoying himself.

What meds is he on now and what has he tried in the past? Hard to do much without a complete history and physical. I would joke that since he's in canada whats her bucket could fix him right up but I like you too much.

If he is coughing that often, sounds like it could be a bronchospasm or gerd issue. What makes it better or worse? Sweats, fevers, chills?

codeine cough syrup, aka lean, aka sizzurp, will supress his coughs it has mine.
and i hope he gets better sorry to hear this bro

@tablefun - i'll find out what meds the family doc prescribed. I suggested he go to another family doc who may know better. Unf. in canada you can't just get up and go to as many docs as u want.

@cindy - Do you think throat specs. would know how to analyze all that and knowledable? My only concern is going to a spec. and they also don't know what's going on. Then starts a merry-go-round of going to as many med. professionals til someone figures it out or prescribes the right medicine.

thx.

before we just suppress his cough and forget about it [insert that weird guy with his chicken cooker] lets not forget to figure out what it is. This doesn't sound like your run of the mill cough and its happened before too.

Sounds like Bronchitis or chronic bronchitis.... I have chronic bronchitis and I get it about 3 times every damn winter. Try AZITHROMYCIN TAB or Z-Pack for short(antibiotic)...its the ONLY thing that works for me and its quick too.

Damaged lungs from all the pole u smoke?

Have the docs eliminated the possibility of an allergy?

Meds didn't work and a doc can't figure it out.....I'm shocked!!!

Meds suppress, he needs to find the route cause (it may be GERD), then he can heal that cough. I'm assuming the doc's did extensive tests?

Have your Dad get a dx from a in-person doc and not on line from someone who's never even looked at his case.
There could be a TON of reasons, and if a MD can't give him the time of day and only rx's meds, have your Dad see an ND who actually spends over 90 mins in consult with a physical. The ND will actually take the time to find the route cause and not just give a med because they are clueless as to the cause.

Gerd cough is nasty and it sucks bad. it comes out of nowhere so it seems and just hits you with cough attacks. is he also gagging at all? i had the coughs so bad Id be gagging too. yuck

thx.

What's ND? Yeah i'm in town, so i'm taking charge now for him. We got some rx today and it seems to help a lot. Yeah! But i still wanna know what's causing this, it happens like every year and silly old man can't remember how he got cured last time.

@inhib: kewl. i'll look into that.

There are so many possibilities, bud

What medication did they give him? Did they do any studies?

If you're not satisfied with that doc, see a different one. You wouldn't go back to a bad barber, would you?

Studies on what?

Not sure if he's in Canada, but not so easy to change docs. He would have to hit up an ER room.

He's in Canada it doesn't work like that, you can't just jump from Dr to Dr cause you watch Dr. Oz and some how think it makes you qualified to know more than an actual medical professional.

There is prviate medical clinics if you want to pony up the extra dough.

Is it worse when he lays down or right after he eats? Those are the things that always aggravated my gerd cough although mine was not always dry there was often gunk in my throat.

Anyway, hope he gets better and you get some answers

I am familiar with the Canadian health care system. My apologies for missing that detail. For a cough of that duration something as fundamental as a chest X-ray seems logical.

Is there a public record of some kind of treatment algorithm?

It's not looking much better for seniors in the US given that medicare just took a 27% cut in payout. Nobody is going to be able to see a large portion of those patients and keep the doors open. Maybe brownbrown will have a solution (the ef guy, knot barry)

yeah he's getting better. gonna let him enjoy xmas then do real tests next year. you know how old people are when things are fine. they hate going back to the hosptial/doc lol.

i thought that was stabilized with the payroll tax cut, it was funded in the same bill right?

LOL no nothing on public record at all it depends on the Dr. treating you.

I had to go to a Dr. twice last year when I sprained my ankle to get them to do an xray. I was going to walkins at the time they didn't even call me to say there was no break. When I got the xray the said if there is something wrong we will call right away.

I have a family Dr. now and even she wont call me unless something is off. She is a bit more willing to do blood tests then any walkin Dr's I have had.

I would assume they used the Ottawa Ankle rules. Not every ankle sprain warrants an X-ray. We use the Ottawa ankle rules down here in 'Murica too. They're handy.
