Neck strain...son of a bitch

I was lifting on last saturday, and during a set of dumbell shoulder press. I felt a small strain in my neck. It hurt for the rest of the day, then a little the next day. Finally the next day it felt as if nothing had happened, so i went back to the gym. After a set of decline dumbell press, i proceeded to do a set of incline dumbell press, when i felt the strain again. Now im hurtin again and im gettin real frustrated. It hurts on the rear left side from the back of my skull to my shoulder. Most likely a trap strain. It hurts mostly when i turn my head

I dont usually have this kind of thing happen tho. I'm taking creatine at the moment...And im wondering if my not drinking enough water could lead to strains? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks

You have what's typically known as a "stiff neck." They can be irritating as hell, but they rarely last more than a few days. I doubt the creatine had anything to do with it. Just gotta wait it out.

i get those every so often, usually if i dip my head forward a bit when pressing or pulling. behind the neck pulldown/presses are notorious for giving these.

Is it anything serious? it just really irked me that 4 days after i first got it, it felt better, then i got it again. It's happened to me a couple times before, but never twice within this short amount of time.

Is stiff neck the same as a neck strain? What does it result from? I figured it was out of the ordinary since it rarely happens.

Yeah it's the same thing. And I wouldn't consider it serious, other than they can hurt like hell for a short period of time.

The trick, for me anyway, is to pinpoint what I was doing that caused it. Over the years, I've gotten them from sneezing, shoulder press, inclines, shrugs....Once I got a really good one from coming out of the water and shaking the water off too quickly. Man that one stung for days.

Anyway, if it's the same movement that's causing it for you each time, then the answer is obvious. But I've found them difficult if not impossible to prevent. They're gonna happen once in a while. All part of the wonder that is lifting. :)

Whew. good. Stupid strains really piss me off. I have this thing about being incapacitated in anyway that affects my lifting. Pisses me off more than ANYTHING. Nice to know it's nothing serious. Do you recommend i stay away from liftin all together until it heals? or just away from exercising bodyparts that may aggrivate it? like avoid chest and shoulders, but biceps, triceps, etc. are okay?

No reason to stay out of the gym entirely. You might stick to lower body for a couple days, or at least avoid any direct aggravation. I'm sure doing bis and tris would be ok too.
