my roommate tried to kill herself

My ex was released from the hospital when her suicide attempt was non life threatening. Meaning, no direct threat to her well being, mental issues aside.
She made another attempt which seriously impaired her ability so function, ie Brain injury. She was then hospitalized until she had the means to live outside the hospital. This meant either hospital staff in the home or responsible family to monitor her.
I would assume they would release her after the immediate danger to her health has subsided. My ex went to the hospital a few times due to suicide attempts, and if there was no physical damage, they would send her on her merry way to try again.

Sounds like she's stabalized, but they're going to monitor her liver function and other vital signs closely for a few days. I tried to off myself that way when I was 15, and came damn close to succeeding. I was in the ICU hooked up to about a million things and they took blood for testing at very regular intervals. She might have done more damage (due to already being weakened by lack of nutrition, or maybe it going through her system longer than it did mine, or a million other mitigating factors), but I took an entire unopened bottle (of like 100 pills), all of it absorbed into my system before they got me to the hospital, and still pulled through. I hope she does too, and the people who love her make sure this is a one time thing and that she really gets help afterwards.

thanks for the support guys. she has had the anorexia for a while; i used to try to cook for her but some peeps just don't want to eat - but she didn't get worse either so i let it go. As for the suicide attempt...she was just at Love Fest so all i can guess is that she tripped balls all weekend and crashed hard yesterday. We'll see i guess

that is awful you had to go through all that; thank you for sharing though; my outlook on this is more optimistic now
once she is cleared medically, they may try to get her into an IP psych floor, especially if the hosp she's at has a psych floor. But a lot of that will depend on insurance and such.

Our medicare system is far from perfect but when someone needs help they get it.
It was actually a positive turning point in my life. I learned some things that day I'll never forget. But given what you K messaged me, she'll probably be ok, they'll just really want to keep an eye on things to make absolutely sure.
As far as the other question, she's not a minor so I have no idea what they can and can't do...but I imagine as an adult she's in control of whether or not she admits herself into psychiatric treatment.

This is exactly what will happen. Medical clearance first, then psych eval. If she passes it, or can be convincing enough, she'll go home, if not they can hold her for 3 days before seeking court permission to hold her longer, but I highly doubt that. Also during these three days, if insurance permits and there is space at a near by mental health facility, she could be transferred there.
