Everyone I know has not just been affected by family members, but had their lives permanently altered in not so good ways. Family is on the surface this "great thing".......yet underneath it is the major shaping force of your entire life. Nobody should have that kind of sway over you. I can't prove it obviously, but everyone here has been negatively affected by family in some way shape or form. I know too many people that have had their lives completely addled by the dynamic of their families. I stand by my conviction that people who grow up more or less on their own become "mentally" the strongest people. I've seen it too much that way to ignore it. All the people I know who have these strong enmeshed families..........fucked up in some way shape or form. It's ridiculous. And those shit dynamics get passed on from one generation to the next.......utterly ridiculous. Your association with these people is simply an accident of birth, no more no less.

Bro, I said in my post that real family does not only include direct family members and relatives. I alos said that yes, they would take a bullet for me and have my back. I've taken beatings and a knife and bailed out more family and friends than I can remember. I've almost died a few times because I took responsibility for family and friends. On the street, in the real world, all you got is those who got your back, and those are FAMILY.

But you are comparing something that's very, very old (evolutionary) with something that contemporary (i.e. several hundred or even a few thousand years). We're wired evolutionarily to feel drawn to and support our relatives. You can't expect to feel rational when immediate family is involved. I'm not unimpressed...very well put, and that's exactly what I think the problem is. Family is an outdated concept imo.....not saying people should grow up on the streets, but once you're 18 you really should cut ties with the people who are going to hold you back the most. I think there was a time when people, especially young men, were pretty much required to get up and go see the world once they turned a certain age. This society has become to incestual and homogenous due to what I beleive to be the judeo/christian influence expounding family as the be all end all. The bible, especially the OT, is full of passages expounding unrequited obedience and fealty to one's family no matter what. And it makes sense seeing as they wanted parents to hammer home that religion to each successive generation. The muslims are the same way about family, and I think it's the background for all the bullshit in the world. Families by nature are becoming restrictive to the human spirit/soul.......shouldn't have to be that way, but it is...."imo".

The families I've made a point to observe......all have a problem with boundaries, including my own. And when you try to set boundaries, you get fought on it. I don't think you can ever be really free until you toss em to the curb and say either you respect my boundaries so that we can have a "non-dysfunctional" relationship.........or I simply don't acknowledge you anymore as people I care to be around for even the smallest amount of time.

Family is not scum... people can be scum. The idea of blood being thicker than water may have held more weight decades ago... but not in todays society. Just because someone is blood doesn't make them a person you should be close to or respect or trust. Blood does not make someone family, it makes you related. Family are the people that take care of you and are there for you. Some peoples family are blood related, other people have families made up of people they have become close to over the years.

I agree with you though Red, just because someone is blood doesn't mean they should mean anymore to you than some random person off the street. I havn't spoken to my blood father in years nor do I care to. If I ever took a bullet for him it would not be because I loved him. It would be because I think I am the type of person that would do it for anyone.
