There was a time when this vision was terribly true to a massive percent. Commenting on MM's post, I actually posted up that info. in another one of Luden's threads on racism, I chose to go a different route this time however. It is all true and happened within my own family as well. What MM said about benefits is true as well, although I do recieve a per-capita payment I am not eligible for medical or some educational benefits (I don't get the land option) because I do not reside in the state of Wisconsin, where my tribe is located, it actually over-laps Greenbay (How's that for living far away from cities and media.). I am a card carrying member of my tribe and as such I can say this....Native Americans, identified by "blood quantum" are the only minority race in the U.S. that is required by the government to be assigned and identified by a number, due to race.
I cannot believe that I just read that it is actually even thought that Native activists were bought off with tax incentives and casino rights....First an activist is actually a person, an individual, and an individual does not get granted a "casino right" whatever that is. Tribes are actually "sovereign nations" which actually means more or less they are and have their own government which actually allows tribes to excersize more rights within state and local government, but are still regulated by the federal government. Also, there is not a single "tax incentive" that has ever existed specifically for Natives. On a reservation things can be purchased "tax free" but that is a result of sovereignty not being native. However, come tax time, Natives just like anyone else are subject to state, local and federal income tax at no special break. As far as any other perks go, they are provided by the tribes to their members, and rightfully so, it's their money or "perk" whatever that may be so they can do what they like with it (Kind of like a wealthy family with old money. They take care of their own, with their own.) SO WHAT.
Think in the now folks, the lack of "bitching" does not have really anything to do with #'s, because groups of people need only ONE person to be heard. Native Americans are actually doing more positive for themselves THROUGH the government than a soapbox will ever get them (This information is not hard to find either.). It's amazing that people know so little about Native Americans in this country, when Natives were such a big part of it's history....I'll bet very, VERY few might even know the fact that Native Americans are just as responsible if not in some cases MORE responsible for the freedom we all enjoy! That's right, one factual and true example is that in the southeast, Natives actually sealed the Civil War! Not helped seal it, they SEALED the victory there for the North.
So little is known about Native Americans in America and even less worldwide. I remember being in 8th grade and having a documentary film crew from Germany at our school for 3 weeks following us around and interviewing students and tribal members, because back in Germany, 90% of the entire population really thought we still lived in Tee-Pee's and hunted for our food and shit. They were doing this film to educate and enlighten, it's a shame our own government couldn't do that, because then BS statements and ignorance maybe wouldn't be thrown around so haphazardly in an almost bullying fashion by people on a chat board and in the RW whose sole purpose in doing so seems to just want to be a thorn in someones side, just for the hell of it. And then, think they are being either funny or know-it-alls when they are actually being neither, and really just making themselves look like a bottom feeder in the process.
Hell, crack a book people or use the intranets for something other than D/Ling my porn and exaggerating your physical stats. These threads are really nice to see, but they are so much better with some education in them too. After all, we like to have fun with each other, here on C+C, and at times that fun is at the expense of other members true enough, but here lately, it's just seeming like people are gathering notches instead of karma by seeing how many people they can deliberately piss off or offend for really no reason except just to do it.
I am Native American, and even though I grew up within the "system", I have lived, and am living a great life. I have a great job. I have had an even better career. I am in the home stretch in obtaining a Phd. I served MY country in Desert Storm. I can actually drink as much or as little as I choose without the fear of alcoholism. I own my own home, drive a new car, and pay for my health insurance myself. I do not get tax breaks or incentives. I cannot open my own casino. And i know more about what is happening and what HAS happened with my people than the majority of posters in this thread, and I don't eat government cheese, so I can honestly say, MYTH....

My 0.02 on Natives in Canada. It does only apply to Canada since I have zero knowledge about whats going down South.
Here Natives living on reservations are basically parasytes. Those living outside are doing pretty well and arent bitching. They get no benefits, have a job, pay their taxes just like a whitey or black man. Reservations are a different. The British set this crap here because they were just too affraid to have them among us. The system should be abolished and natives should just live the same way as us.
Back to why I think those living in reservations are scumbags. 3 years ago I had to investigate a fraud (one native frauding his folks lol). I swear the reservation looked like a dump. People were either drunk, on drugs or just simply dumb. I was with another detective, a Mohawk, who had warned me before but I just couldnt believe it. When I saw that, I realized he was more than right. Pure 3rd world scenario. Their law enforcement were total morons (PeaceKeepers). Again, most agents were drunk on duty or simply lazy. They knew who was smuggling what but just wouldnt admit it. At the end, we got our guy and 2 peacekeepers locked.

I don't dispute or disagree....There are reservations like that, that I would feel the same way about and have. But there are also ghettos, projects, entire neighborhoods and sections of cities that are the exact same, but with different races. that's why I say this stigma shouldn't be placed upon Native Americans or anyone else just because they were born into a specific race. There are reservations that I have not been able to wait to get out of, even when just driving through, and there have been some that I was even afraid to go into. This is actually an entrance to Lambeau Field that my tribe built during the last renovation of Lambeau Field, it serves really no relevance here other than the fact that I think it's cool.

One kid is pretty spoiled and always simply wastes the money away. He doesnt pay for school, doesnt pay for anything pretty much and when they told him that he needs to satisfy a second language requirtment at our school he started bitching about how his indian language was destroyed and he shouldnt be doing that. Both kids are pretty bad students and got into college with a horrible GPA and SATs.
From what I've seen from them and their friends I'd have to say that they are rather dumb/lazy/worthless. Of course there are exceptions.
