Hip pain when Squating

I have not been able to squat because of pain in my left hip everytime I go down. Cannot do leg press either. I can do extension and curls even run for cardio.

I get severe pain just warming up with 135lb so I ust rack it and don't even try to squat for fear of worsening. Hoever it does not seem to get any better even after 5-6 weeks of no serious leg training.

I was wondering if anyone else has experienced hip pain like this and what they did to over come it?

is it from a prior injury? If it doesnt hurt when you walk or run it could be your form....if it persists I'd say see a doc (or even better a chiro) and get checked.

hip like in the front? hip flexor area. thats common, if you have this, stretch your hip flexors. sit in a deep lunge with the torso as upright as possible.

Man, I think I know the pain you speak of!

My left hip, right on the edge of the greater trochanter, would have this nagging ,peristant pain whenever I would do any kind of squat/leg press movement that involved hip flexion.

Honestly I couldn't find what was wrong. I thought it might be IlioTibial band tightness, but stretching didn't really help.

Ultimately, I corrected the situation by icing the pain daily and stopping all leg workouts for about 10 weeks. When I returned to leg movement I was very hesitant to go heavy. I concentrated on perfect form. I think the thing that caused the injury was a slow and steady development of a strength imbalance between my right and left legs. I was depending on my right leg so much that when I had to recruit the left leg for a heavy squat... I ended up overloading it and injuring myself.

That's just my opion..... I'm not a doctor, yet.... and I'm no physical therapist....

I have the same thing. Stretching the hip flexors didn't help for me, it just inflamed the pain. After I started following the Core Performance book combined with pete egoscue's Pain Free hip stretches, then it started going away

Ah yes, the hip pains. I'm an expert on this! Well, up to last year I competed as a Powerlifter and I found that once I went in or around the 200kg mark (About 490 Pounds I think) even for single reps gave me real pain. I could never get out of the squat position after breaking parallel sometimes.

There is a fair bit of truth to what Sonic just said. I believe that my problems came from having spent 6 months solid squatting in order to bring mine up to an acceptable heavy standard. Its a tough exercise that gives you back more than it takes - but it takes alot! My hips just got too much of it.

Anyhow, spoke to a senior PowerLifter who has been competing in World Championships for years. According to him, he only starts squatting about 10 weeks out from a major competition. It is because of the pressure it puts on your hips if done for extended periods of time. Instead, he gets unbelievable strength from the glute hammy and the Reverse Hyper and these transfer 100% into his squat. Like myself, he also likes to do Sleigh Pulling. Then, coming up to the competition he starts squatting and can never believe how strong the above mentioned exercises have made him. He regularly beats records that he held himself in the first place.

Thanks for all the help. I did have some nerve damage in my right leg several years ago and it is smaller now. Maybe that is why my left hip hurts.

Anyway someone in the gym said he had a similar problem and a chiropractor fixed it by popping hip back in place. Anyone every use a chiro?

I am not a big believer in them but would be willing to try.

good info! another thing that might help would be briefs in training. wide squatters can use briefs to keep the wear and tear down on their hips while implementing the exercises you mentioned (rev. hypers, sled drags, GHR's). whatever combo saves the hips. main thing is not to lose flexibility and technique.

solid advice, makes alot of sense.

I would be very wary about the "popping it back into place" myth. For instance, when someone hurts a disk in their back, they often go and get it "put back in". Nothing could be further from the truth. Disks in your back don't pop out. The jelly (forgive the lack of medical terms!) has moved causing the nerves of the disks to rub off each other and give you a mofo load of pain.

Going way off the point, but what I am trying to say is that the advice you received from myself and Bignate would be your best course of action rather than looking for a miracle cure, because the miracle cure is giving the hips a good rest from squatting, but using briefs to help you do other related exercises like the ones mentioned above.

Good luck Bro!

Ok, Thanks. I have also been told to try the tite briefs. But could you tell me what exactly is sleigh pulling. Sounds like something done on a football field. Do you do it in the gym?
