when i come back from the gym i usually will drink a gatorade along with a sweet potato and a lean source of protien (egg whites/chicken) i am wondering if i should use a whole food rather then the gatorade for high GI calories. am i hurting myself by eating low gi foods (sweet potaotes or oat meal) and using the gatorade for the sugar? example foods would be good too

btw everyone mixes up yams and sweet potaotes...i always get the one thats orange. which one is that, and is there a difference (nutritionally speaking i mean) between the 2? thanks

I love a dextrose/whey shake post workout.....Yummy :D

ive looked for dextrose and cant find it ANYWHERE in stores. i was told i could get some online. i should probally look into that.

As for high GI carbs postworkout, you can take a 50% dextrose + 50% maltodextrine drink

thanks for the article, but which is the one with the low gi, or are they so similar its not an issue?

dzuljas,

I thought a banana was bad to eat post workout since it has fructose. Doesn't fructose fill up liver glycogen instead of muscle glycogen?

Does the dextrose really work?I've been adding 2 70cc scoops to my post workout shake for the past week.I hope it works because it makes my shake so sweet I can barely drink it all.
Will all this sugar cause me to gain fat?

I got mine at a local homebrewing store, its sold as corn sugar,100% dextrose.4lbs for $3.89.

you arent gonig to get fat from the dextrose. Instead it will replenish your muscle glycogen that you burned during your workout. Also the big insulin spike you get from the dextrose will get rid of the cortisol, (which puts you in a catabolic state) and put your body in anabolic mode.

Hope that helps

if its too sweet... try maltodextrin next time.... even higher gi, but not as sweet.

banana is not a high GI carbs

fructose is pretty low GI

In my GI list I have about 50 for banana, less than oatmeal

its higher then oat meal thats for sure. but i dont know how high it is....hey you guys said something about maltodextrin, thats what is in splenda....so should i just eat the same as i usually do...oat meal and splenda or sweet potatoes and splenda?

so the dextrose is good right after a workout? is there such thing as too much? I am not too familiar with dextrose. Thanks

100g dextrose with 25g protein is a good start... the recommended amount is 4x the amount of protein (thus my recommendation).

overdoing it would be > 200g
