Well that other thread is getting busy and crowded. So i will start this one with my observations.
In the US, when i unknowingly parked in a no parking before 9AM zone at 8:45 in the morning the officer pulled up behind me, watched me get out, then when i came out of the post office i got a ticket. So much for serve and protect. Same scenario in Europe, the officer pulls up and says"hey bud you should not park there but if you are in a hurry i will watch your car so you don's get a ticket by another ofiicer". I am not bullshittting either.
In the US you can get pulled over for not wearing seatbelts. What a waste of time to pull people over for that. In Europe the officer will pull up next to you, honk the horn for your attention and motion for you to put on your seatbelt. Now that is serving and protecting.
In the US, a young man gets into a bar fight and is drunk. Gets arrested, and now has a record, which will affect his future. In Europe the Cop can see this is just a stupid YOUNG man, one which they were themselves, they will take him away too, but here is the difference. And this is from experience: They will drive him a couple of miles outside the city and let him walk back home, which will take hours. I assure you, you will learn a lesson, and best of all no record, no court, no biggie.
Well i hope those examples showed a clear difference for the most part. But just to be honest i have met PLENTY of nice officers in the US, so nice in fact that i was going to drop a bottle of fine wine off at one station. Seems like a hard job to do when 90% of the population hates you. But there is still a fundamental difference the public interacts with the Police here and in the US.
