im lookin to bulk up, ive got a good upper body and not much bf, but i want to shred it completely so my abs look as good as poss. started cardio work but just wondered how much i shud be doin? i was plannin in 3-4 sessions of about half an hour a week. is this enough? dont wana do too much and jeapordise building muslce.

bulk up first with enough cardio to keep your fitness levels up and then concentrate on cutting, don't try both simultaneously.

im not trying to get huge, just doing my usual weight training programme. yeah i wana bulk but im not solely focusing on that, so just wonderin how much cardio wud be recommended to cut my fat right down. its only around my mid section realy

even if you don't want to be "huge", you'd still have some target weight in mind when you're cut. with that in mind bulk as i described to a little over this and then cut. make sure to diet accordingly, don't cut your cal intake too quick. also, IMO, while CUTTING ONLY (assumes that on lifting days your weights are less), then i'd do it like this:
non lifting days: 30 mins high intensity including HIIT and high rep low weight reps.
lifting days: follow up lifts with 10 mins of HIIT.

Uh, why would you lift less weight while cutting? That's the greatest way to lose muscle.

well, by less weight i mean as much as your body will allow you at that point. i believe some ppl can lift as much while cutting. i don't mean that he should pull out the pink DBs ;)
i should have been more specific.

I think he means you'll almost certainly lose some strength in a cal deprived state.. which is true, although I've found excessive cardio is much more brutal on your lifting than the dieting itself (assuming a timed carb, high fat approach).

I dropped all ''cardio'' except 10 mins pre WO and my bf is still dropping, strength is coming back up and I feel less destroyed. Of course I wasn't giving myself 6 weeks to lose 60lbs like most people who cut :p

so you'd always advise against both - cos right now im training as normal, five times a week for an hour, eating as much as i can, and hav started cardio like i sed about four times a wk for half an hour...am i gonna end up getin no where then

i'd suggest cutting down on carbs, thereby reducing your cal intake. no, i won't recommend cutting and bulking at the same time.

I did my first "cut phase" last year from September - December and got some great results.

Perhaps there's a better way, but I started out with 25 minutes on the eliptical machine after lifting followed by 10-15 minutes of sprint/jogs. Every 3 weeks I would increase my time on the elliptical by 5-10 minutes.

As far as dieting, try not to lose more than 1-2 lbs. per week or you'll likely be cutting into your lean mass. So try not to have more than 1000 calorie/day deficit with your diet.

I kept the weights heavy while I was cutting but I did lose some strength. Nothing too dramatic though. That being said, I feel that bulking and cutting simultaneously is damn near impossible unless you are a highly advanced lifter who has been doing both for a LONG time and understands his/her physiology and their diet really, really well. It's not impossible, but it is definately impossible's cousin.

AAS plays a role too.
