Looking at possible getting one for my wife for Christmas. Ive seen these things start at $300 and go up to $3,000 so fuck me. Not looking for anything too complicated or expensive.

Shes not a professional by any means, but she's always wanted to take much nicer and higher end photos than she can with her standard digital camera now.

Or maybe I dont even need an SLR and something like this would do?

My wife has owned operated her own photography business for 15 years. We shoot all Nikon gear, however the rebel is a great begginer camera, and at 15 mp I can assure you the the image quality will be more then she'll ever need.

What she will need though is Photoshop. W/ digital images it's more about post production then anything.

WTF?

Depends what you want to take pictures of. I debated between Canon and Nikon for a long time and since I will be taking pictures of my kid as he grows up I chose Nikon. Nikon's auto focus is faster and more accurate than Canon's in most all reviews I've read.

Both Canon and Nikon have a respectable line of lenses; Nikon seems to be updating some of their older glass to newer specs and technology, and you also pay a premium for their pro line of glass (Canon too).

Depending how much you want to spend, I'd go with a Nikon D90 (if you aren't worried about full frame) since the D90 can use just about all of Nikon old and new lenses. Some of Nikon's cheaper models can't use older lenses that need a pin to turn the auto focus. If this is your first DSLR that most likely won't be an issue and you'd be buying new lenses anyway.

When buying a DSLR they can come in a variety of "kits" meaning you get the camera body paired with "X" lens. The standard lens is good usually the 18-105mm. For shooting in just about any situation, the 18-200mm VRII lens is going to be your overall best with the D90. B&H has a kit with it, its more expensive but its a much better lens:

I would recommend the D90 with the 18-200mm VRII lens and you'd be set.

Unless you want to do video, forget the T1i. Instead find a used 40D or an XTi and get yourself a Tamron 17-50 2.8 lens. That combo can't be beat. That is what I use.

FINISH HIM!

I have a Nikon D60. It's perfect for my needs like portraits and sports. Sigma makes a lot of inexpensive lenses to match the Nikon lenses. I just bought a 70-300 mm zoom lense for $150 and it meets my expectations.

Id go with a nikon P80 - P90(video is meh though) nikon d5000 or a sony H20 BEST cameras to get your feet wet, try lenses and not drain ur wallet. of course EOS/Rebel are awesome, so are Sony Alpha series but these are pricier and you'' need to buy a decent lens bundled.

Canon Rebel Xti can be had for like 399 or so, complete slr digital. Takes great pictures, etc. If you want to know more let me know. I currently shoot a Canon 1DMkII.

It is a kit and comes with a lense. You can of course, buy other lenses though.
