best 5 lifts for legs?

Squats, Deadlifts(different vars.), and leg press would be my top 3. Throw in some calf raises and split lunges and your set!
 
Barbell Squats (not smith machine!)
Hack Squats (I love this, really isolates thighs especially develops outer thighs for width)
Stiff legged deadlifts (if done right - excellent for hams and glutes)
Then I finish off with Leg ham curls and Leg raises.

Key is to keep progressing in weight. You can lift more than you think... a lighter weight will trick you into thinking that that's the weight because you will fatigue and burn out (but that's not failure that's just the burn) and that is still a light weight -- try for more next time, and you'll see you can lift more. Also learn and keep proper form always.
