Here I was 4 days into it, thinking my CKD diet was going really well.... the first two days I ate chicken, steak and eggs as well as flaxseed oil.... and that was pretty much it. Which was fine, except I had to take shots of pure flax oil to fill my fat quota a lot of the time. And so I bought some 92% protein powder, with only 1.5% carbs. So I started making shakes, which were very convenient and not half bad tasting either. Protein powder, flax oil, some Splenda and unsweetened cocoa for extra flavour. When I had chicken or steak, I'd pan fry it with garlic and onion.

And for some reason, I always thought that unsweetened cocoa, onion and garlic had no carbs. And just a few minutes ago, I found out that they had enough carbs to have kept me out of ketosis.... and so all the flaxseed oil I was drinking was probably going straight into my abs.

So pissed off. My advice.... check the carb content of EVERYTHING you eat, right down to the small little things you add for flavour. Don't assume anything.

sorry for you :(

I am already seeing the layer of fat on your abs :D

BTW, herbs, spices (like cinnamon) are useful on a CKD diet to give a bit of flavor w/o carbs

Sounds like the dreaded misleading carb count. I would recommind doing some cardio and getting back into it w/ some workouts to slip you back in Ketosis. What's done is done, now move on and let's get you back in Ketosis.

Fat-loss is calories in vs calories out, nothing more. Your not going to lose sig. more fat by being in ketosis than not, dont stress that much.

You really think so..... how about some science behind disproving the working of Ketosis, and the fact that when Ketones (by products of broken down fat) are used for energy, you get a higher degree of fat-burning at any give caloric deficit.

I KNOW ketogenic diets are far better than reg "diets". I use to "diet" down in the past doing the old cals in vs cals out, and you know what, never had any fat loss, yet I was down about 15 pounds and doing the cardio. So ketogenic diets do work bro. Look at all the people that are having better results from them.

fat to abs ??

about that fat to abs thing .. just because you may have slipped out of ketosis means that any fat taken in during that time will
turn into adipose ? that's a scary thought .. sometimes I've taken in a significant amount of carbs 6 to 7 , while consuming large amounts of fat, and I didn't gain any fat.

What's the deal Mr. X, what happens to dietary fat when you are not in ketosis ? Doesn't your body use it for different cell functions anyway?

WoW Daniel you are quite 'ketotic' , you get UPSET with carbs, but that's the way to go.

Dsiclaimer : Im simply defending my statement, no disrespect is meant to Mr. X or any other supporter of the Ketogenic diet, I use them to cut up too.

Directly from The Ketogenic Diet by Lyle:

Golay A et al. Weight-loss with low or high carbohydrate diet? Int J Obes(1996) 20: 1067-1072.

Alford BB et. al. The effects of variations in carbohyrate, protein and fat content of the diet upon weight loss, blood values and nutrient intake of adult women. J Am Diet Assoc (1990) 90: 534-540

Both of these studies found no significant difference in the weight or fat-loss between groups consuming high- or low carbohydrate diets.

I NEVER said ketosis didnt work and its a fact it exists, I never claimed that it didnt work so since I never claimed to be able to do so, Im not going to disprove ketosis. My statement simply was that assuming calorie levels are the same, there will be no significant difference between the amount of fat-lost in a ketogenic diet vs a non-ketogenic one.

Maybe it was my mistake for attempting to make a blanket statement about somthing like diets which vary from person to person and I certainly meant no disrespect to Mr. X but thermodynamics are thermodynamics in the end.

And while I agree there is a higher rate of fat-burning, there is also a higher-intake of dietary fat which represents a good portion of the fat being burned.

But again, to each his own, keto works great for me too but the studies I've cited and my own results have shown me that there is no SIGNIFICANT difference between keto and non-keto.

MAYBE the fat loss is the same, MAYBE. However, in a ketogenic diet you retain more muscle, if not all of it, assuming done correctly. Reataining more muscle will give you a better looking appearance, and the ability to burn more calories.

Those studies DO point to the ketogenic diet being more anti-catabolic, which I would think is from the thyroid lowering effect. Other studies show the opposite or that keto diets cause more protein loss (protein was too low though in the study anyway). Regardless, I agree with your statement and like I said with all the problems people have dealing with insulin (myself included) I shouldnt have made such a blanket statement, for obviously you and myself keto works great at preserving muscle but there have been alot of people who seem to lose muscle (could be lack of glycogen) when on the diet, it really depends on the person.
