You guys have to be careful taking when using the 'self defense' argument to shield yourself from the legal repercussions of fighting. State laws don't universally recognize your right to defend yourself from others trying to cause you injury. If you claim 'self defense' you may have just admitted, "I committed assault and battery" according to your state laws.
